View original topic: Advice on Valve Adjustments
Semper_Dad Tue Mar 08, 2011 2:54 pm

I'm getting ready to do the first valve adjustment on my Thing. I'm familiar with the actual procedure having done it in the past on a Beetle and bus (75 TypeIV). The problem I've discovered is the lack of access to the rockers. I have something similar to the Thing Shop's split exhaust system show below only mine doesn't have connection for the heat risers. It may just be an older version.

Any hints or tricks of trade that I need to know to keep me from pulling the exhaust every time I have to do valve adjustments? There's hardly enough room to pop the bail off. Information in the sticky is almost a year old now. Looking for any updates.

i had the same exhaust that came with my Thing. i had to pull the exhaust everytime  . needless to say, i dont have that exhaust anymore

I like the split system. It works best with the tow hitch i'm planning to put on. Without the heat riser connections, it shouldn't take too long to remove and reinstall.

Use a strap or a rag to pop the bails.

With the valve covers out of the way it's possible to just get a super stubby screw driver in there.

Strap idea sounds great. I'll try it out tomorrow. Thanks!

Berg swivel foot adjusters have allen heads instead of the starndard flat head slot. It makes getting in there a lot easier but make sure you're sitting down when you look at the price.

I have them on my westy they were $27 a set back in 93. I found a new set at a show last year for $20.00. Lucky me.

Bugpack sells the elephant / swivel foot adjusters for 30 bucks. Should be fine for stock rockers.

Berg is nice, but for that price you can get a complete set of buckpack rocker assemblies with hex adjusters on the push rod side

The official answer from the thing shop is:

I spoke with our shop manager and he said that the easiest way was to pull off the front half of the muffler. It can be done without doing that but it is very tight. He has done it before.

do those 30 dollar bugpack adjuster have the allen head?

looks like they dont.. never mind then

i am running those split headers. with a LOOOOOONG(ish) screw driver, i can make the adjustment by coming at it from the top of the muffler. its a pain in the ass, but it is manageable. to hold it snug while tightening, i might employ my "Z" shaped screw driver. not usually necessary though.

Anybody try one of these?

Is that a valve adjustment tool Semper?? I imagine it to have a flat heat driver inside the socket already, and use the knob for the driver and the handle for the socket???

Where can one be gotten??

Yes, it is a valve adjusting tool. The knob on top turns the screw driver (can't see it) and handle turns the socket. I've saw one at a swap meet for $6 but someone had bet me to it.

Take a like in the Samba classifieds. They pop up from time to time

JBus has this version for sale.
