They aren't illegal to have made, but they are not street legal. I read through the FAQ on licenseplates.tv. and they say the plates are for non road uses like car shows and advertising. In order to use original black plates here in California, you must have a pair of plates and an original sticker matching the year of the car you plan to put them on. You may be able to have a duplicate made and get it past the DMV, but unless it's an exact replica it probably wont fly. OG pairs are out there and sometimes you can find them for a fair price.

Scratch that, licenseplates.tv. won't even replicate CA plates.

Most of the places Ive seen that repop plates can make CA plates, they just wont ship them to CA. So I guess you would have to get creative with shipping.

Yeah, they removed all of the California Plates at the beginning of this year. Must've gotten some heat.

I looked at buying repops (made one myself for waaay less than $80) but either way I hate the feeling of someday running across an enforcement officer having a really bad day and impounding my car for such a simple reason as me trying to keep with the black plates. The guy at the dmv told me I was SOL trying to get a replacement from DMV. I think the black plates make more people realize how old our cars actually are and all the cool history of the v-dub, plus they just fit the car better. Current plates look crappy on old cars. Anyways just killing time while the frenchmobile is off to paint! Can't wait to see the new!

I think it was KäferDave who wrote in an article for VW Trends about a show he attended. A New Beetle was being driven. They put some "VW TRENDS" plates on it that they had made up like California plates. They didn't drive it on the road with those. They only put them on in the parking lot. The car was ticketed for false plates. California has been "keeping it real" for several years.
