| Did the hood handle and deck lid l handle get painted body color? I have seen the head light rings painted most of the time. Also were bumpers painted sme as car " I see that the dark grey cars have them painted light grey " What is stock. Would a standard with crome headlight rims, door handles, front and rear handles look ok " correct" then have bumpers body color? Thanks for your time. I have looked in the gallery and there are alot of different set ups. |

the handle was not chromed, it wasn't painted, it is just an aluminium handle.
that is what I found on my january 1952 mittelblau standard, and I kept it like that.
hope this helps you, |

| The bumpers, door handles and headlight rings were chromed for export Standards. For home market cars (Germany) only headlight rings were chromed. |

Interesting, it seems VW might have used up parts that were readily available on standards to keep costs down. I have a few questions regarding my 52 standard. First off, I haven't requested a birth certificate from VW so I don't know where the car was originally delivered. Also, I have no documentation or photos of the car prior to my ownership. The previous owner, who owned the car since the early 80's, restored the car a few years ago.
All of these things are painted the body color "mittelblau" on my car: Headlight bezels, outer door handles, inner door handles, window winders, bumpers, hubcaps, and hood handle. Does this seem correct? It looks like at least the headlights should be chrome.
I am also curious about two-toned wheels. It looks like some cars got them while others didn't. Could this have been done by dealers to "brighten-up" an otherwise drab looking car?

| I don't think so. There are lots of pictures of Standards in the factory lot with two-toned wheels. I'm on the fence with my own car. While there are many photos of gray Standards with coral red/gray wheels, I like the plain gray prototype look. |

According to http://www.oldbug.de/ listing the wheels were painted identical to the body on all split standards.

I think it's been established that some split standards had two-tone wheels. There are pictures of new cars on the factory grounds that look similar to these cars. (Don't have it for immediate reference, but I can dig it up.)

years ago I had the chance to talk to a Wolfsburg employee that worked there from 1948.
and asked him about details on my split. He was very pleased he could talk about all the details he remembered.
wheels had two-tones, sigles on the wheel covers where also in white (see picture Blue Baron) and also, and this is very interesting:
on the productionline, he told, sometimes women did the striping in white where normally the chrome trim would be on deluxe cars.
but this was not always the case, so the new owner could not rely on the fact that his standard would have the striping, whilst leaving the factory.
most customers had to live with "aftermarket" striping, or no striping at all. |

Here's a photo (sorry for the quality) showing a line of new splits getting final inspection at the factory prior to delivery.
The car in the foreground is a Standard with two-toned wheels and pinstripe.

Look at the convertible seats. Any info about the year of this pic?
Have to do a 49 Karmann next time.

| My 50 Standard (Hoffman split) is L21 Perlgrau as the body and rim color. All paint is original - well what is left of it - but all of the rims are all original date stamped 2/50 and my build date is 7/50. My split does, however, have the option code M 001, which added chrome bumpers, door handles, hub caps and tank cap, which I believe was typical for export standards. I'm not sure if export splits had the two-tone rims... |
