Why can't you use a stock VW shifter to shift a 915 5-speed tranny? Is it the amount of throw in the VW shifter? Just wondering.

I'm interested in the answer to this too. I just bought a fiberglass dune buggy with a vw pan and Shifter and a 66 Porsche 901 5 speed tranny and 65 911 6 cylinder.
I haven't opened up the Shifter yet but the shifting feels like the shifter was gutted. There is no gate or spring detent action so you have to carefully select the gears or you get a grind.
I think I need to get a 901 or modify a 915 Shifter and somehow fit it to the vw pan.

What I found is that the biggest difference is the reverse lockout and how far you need to throw the lever forward and back/ left and right. I think if you could set it up with a gated shifter, that would eliminate most of the problem.
With the 901, the biggest difference between that and the stock VW tranny and the 915 is the dogleg first. It gets weirder if it is a side shifting tranny or a 901 froma 914 with the mid engine configuration.
I'm still working on it but I think the stock shifter should work.

| I also am wondering about this. I have a 915 trans in my basement and bought that Subaru to 915 adapter. I plan to use it in my 69 Single cab maybe with SVX power. |

Mine's a 911 901. It's in a fiberglass dune buggy along with the 65 911 flat 6 motor. Buggy is in the shop for some motor issues. When I get it back I can check out how the original builder set it up. i know the shifter is a bug shifter but I haven't looked to see if it's modified or how the shifter is linked to the tranny.
