Ok, I've asked local beetle enthusiasts and they're as baffled as I am, here's the dilemma: Just above the 35mph mark on the speedo and inserted into the dashboard is a little round 'dot' that looks like it could be a light of some sort. However It's not a light, I know that much.
At the local VW show I was asking around and one guy who had just found out what is was, was in the process of telling me when... he forgot! He assured me it wasn't a light though and 'something' acutally goes in there. Now I have a photo, although it is a bit small but I have highlighted the oddity:
