View original topic: Newbie Stock Muffler Replacement

Thanks in advance for all the help, guys, I've already learned so much just by keeping my eyes open. After searching around, I couldn't find a topic that went over stock muffler replacement. I don't know if that is because it is so easy or so complicated! There seems to be no problem getting the parts - about 100 all told for german replacements if I tackle it myself, and have been quoted 200 from my local bug guy to do the whole shebang. Any tips or experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hey Ben,

I managed to replace the muffler on my 64 in an afternoon.
I was lucky, no stuck or stripped nuts. The only tough part was aligning
two of the nuts on the driverside pre-heater pipes. Just took a
bit of elbow grease. The muffler was a leistritz and it seemed to fit fine.
I kept the old heat exchangers as they were in good shape.

Ben, a good tip is too "split" the nuts on the head studs with a sharp chisel, this will take the pressure off the threads and you are much less likely to break a stud off in the head. ( if you do it is a bummer, trust me!)

Great, so do-able if I am careful. I guess I need the muffler itself, installation kid, two tailpipes and their kits. Am I missing anything? Thanks for the wisdom!

When you're done with your 'installation kid', can I borrow him? :)
May the Exhaust Nut Gods be with you. Hope you don't snap any studs off. Good luck!

Damn - that installation kid seems to have wandered off again. Guess I'll have to do it by myself after all ;-) I think I'll order those parts and have a go at it!

While you're waiting on your parts, it would be a good idea to soak those studs/nuts with some PB Blaster, just to appease the Gods. Give it some time to work into the threads, anyway.
