My 912-engine is a very tight fit into my car and I was wondering - has anybody made a "lower" more compact and smaller bretaher box that bolts to the original generator stand? Any aftermarket things available?

This filler/breather (without gen stand) is only about three or four inches high:

Bolted to the stand it's only a couple of inches taller than the top of the generator body.

Think that it'll fit the 912?

I had a 67 912 motor in my 56 beetle years ago and modified the oil filler/breather can by cutting a section out of the middle of it and welding it back together. I had a convertible deck lid on that car (there's a scoop under the louvers that catches and channels water that comes through the louvers so it doesn't go right onto the engine). That scoop would not clear the oil filler. I like the idea of the 356 version if that has enough clearance.

If you cut the stand down a bit the breather/filler only sits about 1-2" abouve the gen. So it should fit your eng bay pretty easily.
