I know this has been covered somewhat but I have some more detailed questions in regards to a Type 1 engine in a 912. History first.
A friend purchased an 1968 912 that had been literally sitting in a shed for many years. The good dpart is its rust free, very straight, chrome isn't pitted, the car has good bones and is ready to drive. The negative is someone long ago had scrapped the 912 engine and installed a late model 1600 dual port. It also is unmolested and still has the proper tin, air flaps, dizzy and oil bath air cleaner. It appears they got about 75% of the way done as they fabbed a rear hanger and the engine was installed and able to start and he said it ran well. He then removed the engine so he could clean it up and realized he has some work to do.
What wasn't completed was the finals so I have some questions for those of you have done this conversion.
The throw out bearing fork wasn't installed and laying in the back seat. Will this 912 trans and t/o bearing setup work okay with the VW diaphram clutch? As he was able to start it, the flywheel matches okay.
Will a standard aftermarket VW exhaust like a single QP or other clear okay under there?
It's been mentioned that some custom tin will need be fabbed. Has anyone who has done this have pictures?
The owner got a really god deal on the car and isn't interested in seacrhing out a proper 912 engine. He is quite happy to run the VW engine so he can scoot around in the car on Sundays and perhaps spend some cash on upgrades like dual kardon, ignition, misc. bolt ons.
Any advice would be really appreciated! |

I used to have a webpage on how and what to do but the link is dead.
I have an old 356 book with the info but give me a few days to find it. I could copy it and send it to you.
I'm in Chicago also |

build a decent 1776 and it will be faster than the 912 engine ever was.
don it with 2 customers that were buddies both with 67 912s. one went with the 912 motor and the other build a 1776, 110cam, small heads and 44 webers.
the 1776 would smoke the 912 engine every time |

| I have a 912 with a t-1 upright conversion.Tiger @ A-1 has a great header specific built for this conversion.Keep the org.Porsche motor and have a blast witha built t-1 motor. Mine is 2387 that was hacked together by Bergmann, now reworked and ready to run the way it should. |

I have a 1970 Porsche 911 with a 901 tranny, with the reverse push diaphram (when pushing in the clutch, it pushes the diaphram towards the tranny, not the engine. How do I adapt mt T1 motor to this tranny? I know I need to use a 914 flywheel, but how do you work out a stage 1 style clutch and disc when it is set up to work the opposite way? I believe that before '69, the trans would have been set up correctly from the factory to bolt a T1 right in.. How can I make this work?
Thanks much! |
