It's on the roof since yr. 2000. From my own experience while living in Latvia, I recall most of the "Frankenstein" cars dissapearing from the road in the first half of the nineties. This was mainly because of tougher laws when it came to technical inspections. Things like self-made braking systems, changed suspensions and engine swaps (between different makes of cars) were no longer allowed. Pretty sure it was the same in Lihuania. The VW38 seems to have been on the road as late as 1994, so it is possible that this car may have still be driving about the same time... but considering it still has all of it's KDF running gear and engine it may have been standing for a longer time, like since the '80ies or the '70ies. I'm saying this bacuse by this time it may have been pretty hard to find spare parts to keep it running.
I really hope some of its history can be traced. That would make a cool story. |

| I was just sitting here thinking that it was kinda sad that the VW38 was finished up and that I was no longer seeing updates on it. For the heck of it I started reading the split window section of the forums and to my surprise I find this. Another rare VW found in Lithuania...I couldn't believe it. I can't wait to follow the progress on this one as well! |

Can't wait to see it in Lithuania on 27-29.05. In Poland there were Bugs and cars from western countries during Comunism but Lithuania was closed for cars outside the comunist countries, thats why people changed them, because there was no parts to fix them. Even in Poland you can find lots of cars which was "repaired" with parts from other cars during the 80's. Another thing is that during the 80's and at the beginning of 90's there were good price for all kinds of metal on scrapyards and lots of old cars were destroyed. Another thing popular in eastern countries was changing the zwitters and ovals to newer models with changing tha back window, welding the semaphores etc.
Here's link to the topic on lithuanian forum I've checked google translator and it converts to english good:)
