68 Vert. Any idea if this push button would be stock and if so, what for? I don't know if it is a momentary contact or "locking" contact. Thanks in advance.

That has been my thought all along...which has me concerned. I pick the vehicle up in a few weeks for total restoration and hope I find out the source or reason for the push button installation. I would assume I could replace the "guts" in the ignition to the starter and alleviate the push button...at lease I hope so if this is truly what it was put in for. |

It might be a cigarette lighter because I've seen
them with small knobs like that one. |

| I'm gonna guess horn button-I have a similar looking one mounted under the dash. I've read elsewhere that it is a pretty common band-aid from people who don't get the VW horn wiring. |

Didn't think about that but would explain a momentary locking push button and perhaps the "knob" / emblem has come off. THANKS! |

In other words...a hole I will have to fill and a horn I will have to fix correctly. |

| How about you get a good close photo of the back of the button from inside the front compartment. Try and fgure out where the wires go. |

Found another pic from a rebuild here on Samba of a 69 Ghia...looks like the mystery button could in fact be a cigarette lighter...

When a customer wants a lighter installed, that's the
spot I usually choose to place it. |

Im sorry ladies and Gents......
It is not a horn, not an ignition switch, nor is it a lighter......
It is to activate the flux capacitor....I see it all the time....I was even thinking of installing one myself.
Coincidentally, the pic you uploaded of the blue ghia is actually my car!!!
