Bill Fisher (How to Hot Rod Volkswagen Engines, pg 11) made 77.5 hp with just bolt ons (with out splitting the case) using single port heads, but he did say it might have made 100 with dual port heads. By the way, this was June 20, 1969. Tell us your experience with bolt on parts. Technology (and bolt on hp) must have come a little ways in 42 years. |

i think every ones read that book once in there life ..a lot has changed since 1969 . back then it was the holley bug spray carb . now its dual brosol solex carbs or a progressive weber carb useing single port end castings .it used to be 010s and 019s dizys now its .a 009 dizy .and the 009 knock off dizys there cheaper to buy and there all over the place. if you need parts them. to me the older dizys cost way to much money and the parts are harder to find . headers are still in. but all the good header co. are gone .i think S&S headers are still around . theres slip in 87 and 88s pistons and cyl but i dont like them others do . the single port heads are kind of out dated but you can find shops to put big valves in the single port heads . and dual port heads would be better for more hp . just my two cents spencerfve edlutzenberg wrote: Bill Fisher (How to Hot Rod Volkswagen Engines, pg 11) made 77.5 hp with just bolt ons (with out splitting the case) using single port heads, but he did say it might have made 100 with dual port heads. my stock spec DP long block has a vintage treuhaft header, single zenith atop a vintage empi intake and an o19 "bolted on".
all stuff that would have been available at the time of that book.
it pulls almost as well as my stock carbed 1776 which dynoed @ 72bhp.
the main thing that has changed since then is the all the junky parts that are out there now.
glad i didn't have to use any
the good "performance" stuff from that era is still out there. you just have to take the time to look for it and the time to clean it up.
it's worth it.
usually people don't know what they have and it's all crusty so they let it go for next to nothing
bought an o19 @ PHX BOR for $10.
 |

before i knew about things such as deck height, compression limits, valve float, and fuel pressure, i took heads off a 1600dp that i found in a bug on my dad's friends property, put 87mm cast pistons, and put the heads back on and torqued to specs once, then i fabbed up a blow threw system consisting of a $100 merged header some pipe a junkyard turbo off a 86 ford probe gt, a 34pict carb and stock intake. never got to a dyno, but it's internal waste gate didn't work and i spun it to 7200 rpm then got scared and took my foot off the gas. Once on the street i raced a full body bug that had a 1904 that ran low 14's in a full body ghia with said engine and in 1st and 2nd it was a dead heat, but once we shifted into 3rd I ate him up, then in 4th the fuel was cutting in and out, so i had to stop. |

Love that thread from Turbo Manx, read it over and over. My engine is a 1500 sp that I am putting in my Baja. I am actually swapping it from my Super (see "super low Super") to this Baja I just got. It has a h30/h31 on it with the 009 dist and a 3/8 header with a stinger on it now. I have changed the advance curve on the dist and had to fatten the carb up too, but the difference is huge from stock. I want LOW END GRUNT and THROTTLE RESPONSE. Going to try flap wheel porting (less is more) my heads and some ratio rockers and see what that gets me gets me. |
