What would happen if you ran just starit header? I know it would be much lowder then if you had a muffler on it, but would it screw anything up?

rossmda Sat Aug 09, 2003 7:26 pm

loud as hell, and you should have some back pressure, not really recommended running straight headers

VW Addict Sat Aug 09, 2003 7:32 pm

As ross said, it would be very loud, however shouldnt peak out preformance or make it worse I dont imagine.

The time you really need to be concerned is if you have a leak near the exhaust port on the heads. A quick blast of cold air in the exhaust port can warm exhaust valves. Running a header with no muffler isn't likely to cause this to happen, although you may lean out your engine to the point of detonation if you don't check your plugs (as someone mentioned, some backpressure is a good thing and a necessity).

Oops.

slap a stinger on it...

gwsexton425 Sun Aug 10, 2003 12:11 pm

Then what is the difference from running a stinger, and running strait headers?

VW Addict Sun Aug 10, 2003 1:51 pm

uh... a exhaust tip.

Most stingers come with a baffle, or ones are available to be purchased. Any engine that's street driven needs SOME back pressure. You can re-jet to accomodate for the lack of back pressure, but ya gotta think if you really want something that loud? Even a bone stock a/c VW is LOUD with a straight header. My Fastback has a single glasspack on it and is almost too loud.

Running a header without any muffler after the collector won't make as much power, so odds are you will lose some bottom end power. It has to do with efficiency and back pressure. I've heard a VW with no muffler on the header and it sounded pretty stupid. Even a straight stinger at least has a smooth (albeit blatty) sound to it, whereas the Bug I heard with zero muffler and straight header sounded noisy and junky, for lack of a better term.

My next door nieghbor said my Fastback sounded like a harley when I drove it around the yard with no muffler, that one time. I dislike Harleys, so needless to say, the glasspack went on it before I moved it again.

the back pressure has something to do with the ability of the exhaust system to "scavenge" exhaust gasses.

Im about the order the dual empi quiet packs, just wondering what would happend if i took the quiet packs off. Thanks for the replies.

One more tip, you may want to try and get a set of Bugpack or S&S mufflers...EMPI's exhausts leave a lot to be desired!

This may be outside the norm, but I have a ceramic coated EMPI single quiet pack on a beetle that went on easily and I didn't even have to loosen the heater boxes to get the header on!

Sometimes, that happens, but trust me, it's a one in a hundred chance. I dunno what it is with aftermarket companies. Get with the program, folks!!
