I'm working on getting a 54 kombi on the road. The rear outer reduction box bearing has a metal washer that is the size of the bearing. My question is is this bearing washer necessary? One washer is good the other side is cracked and worked over. The transmission is out of a 53 and has the 4 bolt wheel cylinders. Also can i use the later 2 bolt wheel cylinders with the 4 bolt backing plates?

Hi,
Well in theory if you put it together without you should be ok, the big washer just restricts the amount of gearbox oil the outer rubber seal has to stop. Most of the time they just leak anyway :)
Yeh your fine using 2 bolt wheel cylinders in 4 bolt backplates.

| Thanks for the info. I got it all back together and is not leaking so far. I was able to rebuild the 4 bolt wheel cylinders and all seams good. Got a 36hp and is running good. Off to the Bug O rama with the 54 kombi! :D |
