With the exception of the pans (mostly just the passenger side) the entire shell is rust free, dry and straight as an arrow. It has some Arizona surface rust but thats about it. I'm following the GFK reciepe of stock resto on some detailed earlies.

So here are some update pics of the body removal and pan tear down, as I already mentioned before I have a sweet pair of early pan halves I got from Gerson during OCTO that will be welded in place hopefully this week by Jerry at Jerfab. I'll have more update pics within the week as that process rolls in effect.

Thanks Vic! I see you gots a 53" 3 fold yourself brother! Looks like the business in pics, I really want to see it in person. Can you quit being a VW whore and keep this one??? I mean it IS a 53 3 fold man....

lol, its long gone, was kinda a put together car, wrong pan, lots of filler and wrong aprons, but my notch is my bread and butter now and a keeper....for now...

Too bad...I really wanted to see the 53. Upon looking up your notch I realized my cousin did the paint, I actually saw your car before you did when it was painted. I MUST see how it looks now because the pics are sick.

Hope everyone had a great 4th of July, however the highlight of my week was today as I took the torn down chassis to Jerry at JerFab now at his new shop in Upland to get the "treatment". He'll be sectioning in the new pan halves from Gerson, removing and reinstalling the original jack points, seat rails and floor mat snap buttons. I was a little concerned as I had a few snapped chassis bolts, but Jerry reassured me that he'll take care of those as well. Jerry pointed out a few cracks here and there and will address those as well as reinforce the clutch cable tube. If anyone can handle this task it's Jerry. More pics to come as I have powder coating next on the agenda as well as rebuilding the original split case tranny next.

Thanks Russ,

I'll be looking you up shortly for a cruiser pedal when I send my pedal assembly out to get restored. Do you not offer the various color pedal mats anymore??? I recall different colors a few years back.

Save it for me Ray, I'm in no hurry just, sourcing parts as I come across them. Whenever you get back, hit me up and I'll either Paypal you or maybe we can meet up since we're driving distancance apart. I noticed you got a close number matching engine case, that's a sweet score!

Steven G. Wed Aug 10, 2011 5:56 pm

Here's some update pics of the pan at JerFab in Upland. Jerry should have them done before weeks end and than its off to the powder coaters. Notice the attention to detail with the "correct" drivers side outside seat rail and floor mat snap buttons. Just when I think I saw it all Jerry leaves me in absolute awe. I must say big thanks to Jerry @ Jerfab and Gerson @ Klassicfab for helping thru this stage.

I got my original to the car split case transmission back from Rancho Performance Transmission along with a few suspension pieces & adapters powder coated. All the dirt, grime and nastiness is becoming cleaner and cleaner every day.

Steven G. Wed Aug 10, 2011 6:55 pm

Big thanks to my buddy Blue in San Fernando for supply me with awesome original unrestored set of matching plates. Took FOREVER and a day, but I FINALLY got the YOM plates registered to the 54. Whoever said it was easy was either lying or very lucky....or maybe I was the exception. Regardless, after countless visits to the DMV and calls to Sacramento it's finally official.

Thanks Ray, just following protocol on my build, trying to do it "right". I've told myself I'm keeping this one so I won't be doing any short cuts. Hopefully if I can keep pace I can catch up to you, just a couple days ago I had Paul Smoot over my garage taking a look at the body. If all goes well I believe he will have the body in a few months as soon as Jerry at JerFab is done doing his part first. Best of luck to you on getting your YOM plates done, if u have any hang ups just toss me a call/PM/email, I have a Sacramento contact number that can help you out with any bumps you might come across.

I'll be picking up the pan today from Jerry's and it's going straight to the powder coaters. I should have some more update pics by this time next week in regards to the pan...After seeing your notch the other day it helped get my ass in gear again...R you going to the Jamboree???? I will be there for sure picking up my restored pedal assembly from Scott along with a set of OG dimpled rear fenders I got from YUSTRN.
