This ´51 bus was found in Germany recently!

Although firstly being supposed to be pure scrap the wreck remains (body and chassis fragments) went to a well-known German car restorer for quite high 6 k€.

Until its restoration the car will be on display in the museum of the German town Fladungen.

We see: It is 2011 and anything is possible; BD´s are just for the big boys.

Wow! looks like a fun project, Did you get the remains of the driver door?

Bergepanzer Thu Jun 02, 2011 8:28 am

Hi,

yes, the driver´s door looks nasty indeed. After 50 years outside this is a normal state. What´s interesting is just the front doors´ window frames as they are pre 52.
I also have two doors in similar state from a 53 wreck in my shed.

But much more important: My VW buddy Klaus "forgot" to tell me where he had the pictures from: http://fladungen-rhoen.de/news/detail.php?nr=2685&kategorie=news

I talked to the new owner of the fragments last week and sold him a 53 front roof area so he will be able to get the roof back into life. He will use a 66 roof skin and is going to implant the 53 front roof area there.

Great project; the front beam and the rear axle are also there ... looks much worse than it is.

six thousand euros?

good to know....

Bergepanzer Thu Jun 02, 2011 11:36 am

Yep. That´s what the owner told me.

A Dutch dealer poisoned the well with a bid of 5 k€ beforehand.

So he convinced the finders to leave it for 6 k€ as the bus then would stay in Germany and will not be sold further for fast money to the UK or US.

It is strange to see how prices can vary on BD projects nowadays.

The older the more expensive.

Judging from that point of view a ´54 BD is "new".

if it has a rear bumber, it's a "late model"

Bergepanzer Thu Jun 02, 2011 1:17 pm

Seems as if we both know what I mean ...

That is unfortunate that the price got jacked up by another bidder.

I don't think anyone in the USA would pay 6000 Euro + shipping to the USA for this Bus.

I hope we can see some updates of the restoration in the future.

UZI Fri Jun 03, 2011 3:39 am

i might be mistaken but i think the final buyer jacked up the price. as for the dutch guy- if someone offers alot of money out of the gate and are willing to pay it, they expect to get the deal done.

who was the dutch dealer? he must be disappointed. i will sell him my deluxe to make him feel better.

Lou V. Fri Jun 03, 2011 6:00 am

Sometimes its about more than money! Looks like the bus is in good hands.

Are we sure this isn't a joke? 6000 Euro? There's nothing left of this thing. Does anyone see anything that wouldn't have to be replaced?

Lowdown Dirty Rat Fri Jun 03, 2011 11:41 am

^^ you obviously have never seen Bergepanzer's deluxe. This is not a joke I'm sure.

tstracy39 Fri Jun 03, 2011 1:59 pm

I'm sure that will buff right out.

The two sections in red appear to be fine??

I am really going to keep an eye on this one................

I can just say what the new owner, Michael M. from N., told me.

As BDs are even currently being harder to get (in 10 years the first ones will be 71 years old) we will have to expect astronomic prices for even completely rotted vehicles soon.

Market and demand regulate themselves. That´s market economy.

BDs are no ubiquities like Ford T or Ford A models.

And many of us will moan in 15 years "ooooouuhh if I just had grabbed that rotted garden wreck which was offered me for 3 k€ in 2012 ..."

Life is much more than a VW hobby, by the way ... ;) ... you wanna build a house and your children will grow up ... and anyone is always short of TIME.

I´m sure Michael will do a good job with this ´51 and - yes - it doesn´t have a rear window ... so an early and very desirable bus.
