I have a 1964 pan mated to a fiberglass dune buggy.
I am installing a new motor and trans and noted that there is no tube between the hard line that passes through the fan shroud and the tube that is at the end of the chassis. The throttle cable is exposed between these two points.
Is this correct? Am I missing a component?
If so...got a part number and vendor contact?
THanks!

You do need something there.
Something is a Bowden tube. :)
Sorry - I don't know the part number.
I'm on the wrong continent to answer the vendor Q. |

I think that guide tube came along in 66. Before that the cable was just hanging out in the breeze. |

The throttle cable, as Dr Scope says, is exposed. There is no tube between the body and the trans for the throttle cable. The clutch cable, however, requires a Bowden tube that sits between the body and trans. Hope that helps. |

You DO want a rubber boot at the tunnel end to keep dirt and water out, even on a stocker, but especially on a buggy. |

There IS a tube on the throttle cable of cars newer then ours! I'm not sure when it came, but I had one on my 70 years ago. |

Up to about 1961 VW used a wacky kind of paper clip looking item bolted to the nose cone to keep the throttle cable from rubbing a hole through the nose of the transaxle.
After that they went with the flexable throttle tube. |

Someday I'd like to actually see one of those 111721551 "protecting cover for carburetor course" tubes in person. I think I saw part of one once - it was a plain plastic tube I found some remnants of one on a 1965, but it wasn't like the the mid-1966/later tubes, more like a simple plastic sleeve is all. The older 28PICT section of the 61-65 Bentley doesn't even mention it. I've noticed now that the later 28PICT-1 section does mention it though (28PICT-1 was introduced in Nov 63), calling it a "plastic hose" - but the photo used is obviously the same photo from the previous section, just retouched. Progressive Refinements doesn't even mention it on a type 1, they have some notes on types 2 and 3 though. The Aug 1971 Type 1 German parts book on VW's website doesn't even list that part number, just showing the ones that came after mid-66.

If you don't have that tube for the throttle cable, you'll get engine surges as the engine rocks back and forth because it's pulling on the cable. |

No, you won't. That only happens if you have a bad front tranny mount. Or at least, in my 600,000+ miles of driving various early 60s bugs without one, the only time I ever had that happen was when my front mount went bad on my 62.
In my opinion, the solid-wire throttle cable used up until mid 1966 does not need anything between the frame and engine. However the stranded cable they went to after that... I'd say yes, and use one. |

How do you attach the tube to the front engine tin? Is there a clip of some kind that's supposed to secure the accelerator cable tube where it meets the engine tin? |

For the tube that passes through the fan shroud you can put a ziptie or small clamp around it to keep it there. The flexible guide tube just slides over the end of the guide tube in the chassis and the guide tube in the fan shroud, no clips. |
