Bandet, congratulations on your bus. I'm sure the significance and value of this particular bus have come as a surprise. Personally I think you should seriously consider selling it. Put it out there as "trade plus cash offers only". I'm sure you could/would end up with a nice, complete bus and some play money.
Feel guilty selling it because you got it from a family friend?
Trade for the bus of your dreams and enough cash to refund your purchase price.
I don't mean to sound condescending but this bus should really be in a Westy geeks hands. It deserves a level of care and an attention to detail the average owner can not give it. FWIW I would put myself in that "average" owner category.

I've herd that from some other people to. I just dont know whats a good price is if I was to sale it. I've herd really high & low prices. Just need to do some more home work on it.

sub-hatchtim Sun Jun 19, 2011 11:02 am

sell it to me for 10 bucks

dont sell it man you'll never be able to replace it but with that if you feel like you cant preserve the historical significance of this bus sell it to someone whom can

First off- Congratulations Bandet!

Not to discourage Bandet- But I would have to agree with Aaron.
Unless you are a HUGE VW nerd and have a ton of money to put in to restoring this bus properly- its not the bus for you.

Take whatever number you think its going to cost to restore it/drive it and double it. Now double it again- and you have a close to realistic number of $$ its going to cost to get her on the road properly.

You could easily trade that bus for another "first bus" and have cash in hand and something to enjoy NOW.

Since neither you or your buddy knew what type of a rare bus you guys had- I don't think your friend would feel bad/know the difference if you traded this bus for a sweet deluxe and got some cash in your pocket.

welcome to the big leagues lol
having a wolfsburg bus of any model is a whole different ballgame
i had been a bus guy for 10years when i got mine
and i learned so much more just in the first year about the differences
sell it or don't sell it your still going to get a good eduaction from this bus

Jeff Power Sun Jun 19, 2011 11:24 am

I'll have to support the notion that to do this bus correctly its gonna take alot of time, knowledge, and money. Whether you keep it or not is up to you. If you are really just interested in owning and enjoying a bus and could care less about the provenance, I would say sell it. You could easily get a very cool bus plus some extra cash, and have a bus you could enjoy now. I would wish you good luck in your decision, but its apparent you've got plenty of that!

bandet Sun Jun 19, 2011 11:29 am

here are some of the wolfsburg features I think.
I think they mach one of there past that is on here.

Awesome find! Dont let people talk you into selling it.

Research it/fix it/enjoy it!

My 2 cents

Jake Martinez Sun Jun 19, 2011 12:43 pm

bus looks very nice. i think ive already said this, but saying it again!

looks like it has/had a bug sunvisor mounted to it on the inside?

Kelly Sun Jun 19, 2011 12:45 pm

To say somebody isn't worthy of owning a rare or nice bus is an insult, regardless of the level of knowledge they have about buses. I understand what Aaron is saying but the new owner has pursued this bus and got it, never mentioned hacking it up or tossing the rare interior out, and wants to get it back on the road. No mention of flipping it or finding the "right" owner for it.

I hope you don't sell and you learn as much as you can from this site and others. Don't be scared to make it road worthy but have the sense of asking plenty of questions if you run into something you're clueless on. By all means do not throw anything away that came with the bus, put it in a seperate pile even if it doesn't appear to be VW or Campinbox equipment, what you don't know now could cost you later if you do.

Aaron Sun Jun 19, 2011 2:07 pm

It's presumptuous to say sell it because "it's going to cost so much to "restore" ect.ect" and insulting to say someone isn't worthy. These are not the points I was making.
Simply... This is not a good "only bus" for someone waiting a driver.
If Bandet is looking for something to drive once in awhile, something to research, preserve and restore; keep it, congratulations it's awesome. You will get a ton of support and information here.
If Bandet purchased this because he was excited about working on and driving an old bus then as cool as this is, it just isn't the best platform.
He can "roll it over" into something that will better serve him.

People get so caught up in want something ONLY because others express interest or place value on it.
Someone said "if you sell it you'll never get another one".... SO WHAT! Does he even want what this represents?

If I never own another 23 BD, that's fine with me, I really don't want one. I do like owning a BD and am happy with my '54 Standard. However, to that point: I would not want my '54 as my only bus. It's to valuable, not only in a monetary way but also in a historical way for me to drive and enjoy in the way I use my buses. It's a great second bus to geek-out on and drive on occasion.

bandet Sun Jun 19, 2011 2:34 pm

I see all of the points people are saying. I dont think I have the no how to do the bus up right. I dont know enough about old westys to sell yet as well. When I got it, it was to drive it. I have four girls and a bus with no back seat.

The Grudge Sun Jun 19, 2011 2:37 pm

I hope you keep this bus in Idaho. 8)

It seems you to have a heathy respect for what you found and in no way would I suggest rushing into selling it. This is likely a once in a lifetime chance to negotiate stumbling onto something "rare" into owning something that will serve you well and exceed your original expectations.
Are you familiar with the Dormobile conversions?

bandet Sun Jun 19, 2011 3:26 pm

ah no. Im so new with bus's I thought they only come in yellow and had kid in them. LOL

bandet Sun Jun 19, 2011 4:06 pm

Isnt that cool?

Jake Martinez Sun Jun 19, 2011 5:15 pm
