You really should follow ken's dash pod switch re-furb guide found a third of the way down here:

I did this over the winter this year and the difference is amazing, well worth cleaning all that dirt etc out |

Awsome, thanks scotty, my switch worked as you described but definately could do with rebuilding - dirty contacts
OK more questions! Help very much appreciated...
Is the starter motor button always live? i.e. even if the ingnition is not turned on when pressed the starter turns over - mine does, so what does the ignition actually do when turned on?
Is the coil wire always live? Mine seems to be (I have no engine in but tested at the rear end its live). |

I dont think the coil wire should be live with the ignition off, the starter button will work with the ignition off though....well mine does.
The starter switch takes its power from the light switch, via fuse 1, which in turn is connected to the battery via the starter solenoid, turning the switch sends power to the coil wire via fuse 2
Please correct me if i'm wrong, all this applies to a 54/55 stock wiring circuit
Have you got a wiring diagram Rich ? |

I agree with everything above, for 54-55.
Yes, the starter button is always live.
The ignition turns the coil on by powering the fuse box contact where they both connect to the same side of that particular fuse. |

| Last question...hopefully....Are the fuses all white 8 amp? or is the red 16 amp used on fuse 1 and 2? |

| For 54-55, they are all white, 8 amp, fuses. |

following up on what rich has said, and studying the wiring diagram whilst sorting out rich's bus..... can the live wire for the starter be moved to the other side of the ignition switch??? to disable the starter button when the ignition (key) is off?
or is that a deff.. no! my only concern with this (if i have worked it out right) is can the original ignition (key) switch take 12v through it??
cheers buzz |

I don't see why not, although that might be more wear on the ignition switch contacts if they are not used to that much load going through it.
6v vs. 12v shouldn't matter since it's just a set of contacts.
I've never accidentally pressed the starter button, if that is a concern.
You have to push it in pretty far to get it to work. |

| You have to leave it as it should be for those comedy moments when you're wondering why your bus won't start...... |
