View original topic: Cut a Hole Bigger

I have a water inlet in the side of my bus (pressure regulated like an RV).

I bought a new one because the old one broke.

The new one requires a 3 1/2" hole while the old one had a 3" hole.

My question is:
How do I cut just a quarter inch the whole way around without damaging the paint?

I have thought about using a dremel tool for this but wanted to hear what others thought first...

I've also thought about grinding down the plastic on the water inlet to fit in the 3" hole but there may not be enough material and I'd rather not weaken it.

Any help is appreciated.

I think a dremel is a good option.
A few suggestions I would make:
1. Go slow. Let the dremel do the work
2. Put tape over the paint and draw you line over the tape. That should help with damaging the paint
3. Use a fresh dremel bit.

Others may have better suggestions, but that's mine.
Good luck!

I think there are also some air powered nipper tools that can take out little bites. Possibly in conjunction with a flanging tool.

cover the hole edge in real good tape like 3m body shop type..the "yellow"...grab an airsaw with a super fine blade like a 36t...squirt some wd on it while your cutting.

done

thanks guys. I need to go get blades for my dremel...

I have a couple similarly guaged pieces of metal that I can use to practice.
