i apologize if these do not belong here, if so Everett you are welcome to remove them. I found these in a split beetle i have and they dont seem to be correct, the date on the speedo itself is marked 12/53. there is also a marking on the pod itself #l 141.041 once again if these are not barndoor related I am sorry to have wasted anyones time here. thanks. by the way it is 2 seperate pods. |

Yes, they are Barndoor.
I believe it's the same pod for a Standard model Split-Window Beetle too?
The speedometer is Barndoor since the cable connection comes straight out the back. |

Here's one ad

If you search on barn speedo in the Bus parts category, a bunch come up.
If you search on pod in the Bus parts and Bug Parts through 1957 categories, a bunch of face plates come up. |

| The pod is difficult to gauge the price on but the speedo would sell for about $250-$325 if the movement and odometer still work. To test it out, put a bic pen in a power drill and set the rotation to counter-clockwise, push it into the socket and run it till the odometer reading increases. |

The last two pictures are of a later barndoor pod(Late barndoor... There's a contradiction for ya). Early pods, like the split beetles, had the numbers wrapping from the 11 o'clock position counterclockwise to the 1 o'clock position.
I believe this stopped in '53... |

What VW has a counter-clockwise speedometer like this? I though all went clockwise, just the early started at 1:00... More curious than anything.. |

Yes, 50-53 Buses had a speedometer starting at 1 o'clock:
The above is a '53 speedometer. |

Not for a regular Split Beetle. If you hooked it up to a normal Split Beetle, it wouldn't do anything, because the cable would be spinning the impetus for the pointer in the wrong direction ie straight towards the detent instead of towards the high end of the dial. Odometer might work, but it would be going backwards. Maybe it's for a RHD Beetle... or maybe not. VDO made speedos for a wide range of makes and models of cars, trucks and tractors, in addition to making aftermarket speedos for what have you. |

Everett if you need the glass and glass retaining ring for this I have one of each, glass has one little abrasion on it but otherwise mint. |

| so i guess the 12/53 marked on mine would make it for a 54 (late-barndoor) |

| did they not have them in mph? i know my zwitter (52)is also in kph but was brought here originally to america , unless somebody over the years changed it out. i know this isnt a thread on zwitters but was wondering if vw only brought vehicles of this age wether it be a beetle or a barndoor over here only with kph speedos. |

Barndoors had MPH speedometers too.
I don't know if they were available for every earlier year but surely 52-up as I have seen one in a '52 Deluxe and you can see my 53 one above and I've owned original 54-55 USA-delivered Buses with the original MPH speedos. |
