Clean all the contacts, all.
Use a butt connector to add 6" of new wire to each one.
Put the terminals on.
Insert the light housing back into it's spot.
The metal "TABS" on the light itself grounds to the opening in the roof.

Now you should have 3 positions on the switch: On...Off...On with door open.

Weil, I haven't really been able to do to much lately. I am waiting on the lift! We finally got the paying job off of it and I am hoping to be getting the bug back on it today or tomorrow. We need to do the axle boots, rear axle seals, and front upper ball joints. Once all that is done, the bottom will, hopefully, be taken care of.

I need to get our borrowed upholstery sewing machine threaded. Once our friend comes over and shows us how to do that, I can sew my seat covers. They started coming apart at the seams so it is an easy fix. I just don't know how to thread the machine. I know how to do a normal sewing machine, but this thing is a different beast! Once they are sewn, I can put the new padding on (bought that today) and get the seats back together. Then I should be able to drive it a bit better. LOL See the pics in a later post for a look at my temporary seat! LOL

Here is one thing I did and figured out how different some things can be! LOL

Before,

After,

They look better but look to be a little on the yellow side. As you can see, they are 2 different kinds. I didn't realize they were different till I started to take mine off. Then I realized mine are horizontally mounted and long. The shorter one came out of a car that I found at PnP. Can't remember what year it was. That is another thing I put on my list to look for at BugORama.

I am kind of waiting to do to much more till after BugORama. I don't want to spend to much now, and not have money to buy things there. I really want a roof rack and I know those can cost big bucks. So hopefully I will be able to do more updating on this thread after BugORama!! :D

Happy to see an update on this bad boy

Starr1969 Sun Aug 28, 2011 5:46 pm

I really wish I could figure a way to get over the hill for Bugorama. There just is no money for that. It's a long day to do it all in one day but hotel, food and gas for 2 days isn't feasible. Maybe the grandparents could watch the kids...if not I look forward to seeing your purchases.

Well, just when you think the paying job is going to be leaving, it just doesn't happen. LOL Twice now the injector seals have been changed. First time, start the car up, no leak. Next day start the car up to move it out of the garage, leaks like crazy. Second time, start car, all is good. Park it out in driveway over night and today, start it up, leaks like crazy. About 2 hours pass, start car up to move back in the garage, get it in there, no leaks! Uggghhh! LOL What I am trying to say here is, the bug didn't get the lift today. Oh well, hopefully tomorrow.

I did try out the TR3 Resin Glaze on it though. I just did the one fender. I need to wash the car before I do the whole thing.

Here is a before. Pay attention to my reflection.

It's hard to see my reflection.

After just one coat.

Lot easier to see it now!

Here you can see the fender compared to the rest of the car.

I plan on doing it a couple of times. It's not the best paint job and it does have cracks, but that resin glaze sure helps what is left of the paint! :D

That is magic. Haha

It's been a while since I updated my thread, so I figured I would! :D

We finally got the car back on the lift but didn't get everything done before it had to come back down.

We got the clutch re adjusted, again LOL. We also got the seals changed. So no more leaky axle. We went to Bugorama over the weekend and found a couple drums, so we were able to replace one of mine that was getting kind of iffy! Then we had to take the car back down so hubby could work on his other project.

I still need to put the axle boots on and change the upper ball joints. Then the underneath will be done. I hope! LOL

I also picked up a horn ring at Bugorama, so I will be trying to figure out how that goes on soon! :D

Other then that, not much has happened. I kind have gotten on another project over the weekend. If any of you visit the Bay forum, you know what I am talking about. For those that don't go there, I picked up a 70 Bay Westy over the weekend and have stripped all of its insides out. Now to wash and put things back together! It's under My 70 Bus.

So now I am trying to do two projects at the same time! LOL One good thing is, the bug is in the shade in the evening and the bus in the morning, so I can split the time on each! LOL

mykidsbug Tue Sep 06, 2011 10:35 pm

well, i think yall are doing a great job.. Im going to try that TR3.

Starr1969 Wed Sep 07, 2011 7:10 am

Gonna def try the TR3 too! Congrats on the new project, 2 buses and a bug...I jealous!

Finally, we are getting back on the bug!! It is finally on the lift and the axle boots are done!! Hopefully today we will get to the ball joints. Then it can come off the lift and hopefully stay off for a while!! :D

All I need to do to drive it is get the driver seat reupholstered. Well, actually just need the cover that was on it, re sewn. Then I wil have a comfy more stable seat to do some more test driving in. :D

Once I figure out if the brake fluid is leaking or not, and also get the carb working better, I hope to start driving it to work and back!!! Kind of excited, but have to take it slow. Need to make sure it is safe to make the 40 mile round trip!!

Oh, I found this on CL today. 9-19-11

So now I have a rack!! :D

webberjames95 Mon Sep 19, 2011 11:58 am

pic of rack installed please! :D

I have to go out and lower the bug some! LOL It is on the lift, up in the air, right now. I will go out after lunch and stick it on there! :D

justcruzin Mon Sep 19, 2011 5:17 pm

Not the best pics, but it is on the car! LOL Car is still on the lift though and the lighting sucks.

justcruzin Sat Sep 24, 2011 7:13 pm

We finally got the ball joints and axle boots replaced. The bottom is done now!! Well, I thought it was anyway.

I went to start it to move it out of the garage yesterday and I had dash lights but it wouldn't turn over, not even a click. Hubby had previously left the key on for a good half a day or so. I figured that drained the battery. So I charged it all night last night. Went out today and still had nothing. We even tried using a jumper box.

We didn't have time to investigate the problem any further today. So I am kind of bummed. I was really looking forward to just driving it for a bit, even though I still need to get better seats in it, and clean the carb again. LOL

One step forward, and another one back. LOL It will bet done soon enough though! :D

If the key was on that long...check your points, I bet they are fused.

Aynthm wrote: If the key was on that long...check your points, I bet they are fused.

Yah, I checked the points and I was shocked to find out they are ok!!

Today we went out and jacked the car up in the rear and Bob climbed under it and tried to turn the motor over by using a screwdriver to arc the starter. That did it. I tried the key and nothing. He turned over via screwdriver again, then I tried the key once more and it turns over with the key. His conclusion is that the starter is not getting enough juice to it. He say's we can ad one of those relay things that Fords have to it and that will allow it to start via the key all the time. I guess my Westy has one, he saw it when he was under it one day. I guess if it is good enough for Wes, it is good enough for the bug. :D

Now we wait for the lift again. LOL Although, if it starts with the key the next time I go out , I may just have to take it for a drive around the neighborhood! :D

Aynthm Sun Sep 25, 2011 11:35 pm

I hooked my radio up so that it only came on when the key was on. I sat there playing around with the stations and making sure everything on the radio worked. Got around to starting the car and it wouldn't start.

The only thing I changed since I started it last was the radio power wire. Went on the samba to search and read up on "points being fused" by keeping the key on for too long. I was like huh? Is that for real?

I had no idea these old cars were like that. I went to look at the points and they were melted. I had no idea that was even a possibility!

I changed the points and it started right up. I switched the radio power wire right back to where it's supposed to be. I guess I learned a lesson at the cost of a brand new set of points.

I am glad you were able to save yours. I wonder why leaving the key on didn't affect your points and it burned mine?

Maybe my points happend to be closed at that time and maybe yours were in the open position.

I wonder if there is a way to keep this from happening in the future?
