Recently we did some overnighting at the in-laws in the backyard. It wasn't a full setup like at the campground for us. We had some rain on a couple of nights.

I'm wondering if any of you guys/gals have come up with an awning for over the slider windows for rain. I had a small nylon fly that I attached to the edge of the gowesty fly over the slider door. It almost prevented water from dripping in.(the door was open with the screen on) With a bit of tweaking I think it will work.

The window behind the stove leaks in any rain. My pea brain is still working on an idea for that one. It would be nice to have a little plastic deflector of some type that attaches to the rain gutter...

Thoughts? Pictures? Ideas?
Brian.

I sent this idea to the skylight guy a while back, but got no response.
Maybe someone here has the skills to make this.

I've got a product idea for vanagons, and I think that given your expertise with molding skylights, you could make it happen. It would probably be pretty popular too.

Bernd Jaeger sells louvered metal inserts that roll into the front windows or slide into the side windows and allow ventilation. I have a set, and they are great, with one exception. I can't see through them, so I have to take them out to drive.

I would love to have a set of louvered inserts in clear (or tinted) plastic that I could leave in all the time. Sort of like Jalousie windows for the Vanagon. I think they would be popular because they could replace the need for the brittle oem screens, and you could make them so that they fit the sliders on the Westy, and on passenger vans (which don't currently have an option for screens at all).

Let me know if you want more info, or if this idea isn't clear, but I think it's something that might be a good business for you, given your existing success in skylights. I'll buy the first set!

Best wishes, thanks for helping keep Vanagons alive (and leak free).

there is apost here in the vanagon forum about a fella who used the soffitt vents from Homedepot stacked to allow airflow but prevent water infiltration.. though I can't find it at the moment.

also I've seen the use of a thin plastic (flexible) cutting mat snapped in to create a bow into the slider window frame. worked suprisingly well except if there's any wind.

some have gone the Bay Jalousie window route to allow ventillation during rain.. and it's one of my favs.

guys in the Bay forum have a hread using a $40 dining canopy modified to be a 2pole rain/sun fly.

and of course a tarp, a few poles and some rope can work wonders as well.

creativity and budget usually dictate resourcefulness.

my solution is jalousies

How does that van drive around with that flag pole attached? hehe.

After I posted this I went to the resource centre(basement) and grabbed a flat plastic rubbermaid tote top. With a few mods it could work. I'm thinking a friction fit over the gutter and little legs with suction cups for the van. Can you envision it?

If we are in full camping mode the slider is usually open and covered with my fly or something similar for rain protection. On those few occasions when the top is down for foul weather and you need ventilation it would be a neat thing to have.

I'm not sure I'm up for the jalousie project...

I have a Fiamma F45. Between the bottom of the awning box and the inside of the gutter above the sliding door I have glued dry bag type material. A long strip from one side of the door to the other. It has never leaked and I keep the door open in any kind of rain. Unless of course it comes in sideways. For the kitchen window I cut a piece of stiff but bendable aluminum flashing. I bent a little lip across one side and use it to attatch it to the gutter with strong spring type clamps. Works well. Sorry no photos at the moment. Merv

This page has a diagram for a plexi window cover. It's on my to do list.

themervino,

Methinks that is a BRILLIANT idea, and I am doing it soon! Thanks for the post.

I loved the idea for the stove. My coffee pot is about an 1/8" more in dia than the rods, so have to use my real big one. Anyone manuf that? Maybe with a tube to git ver insted of a weld? Be a great idea.

The VW emblem is cool, but not necessary.

just have to watch the fast food drive thrus.

as for the Jalousies.. I'd think you were in a prime locaiton for better rainy weather ventillation. though it's likely you don't see alot of HOT rainstorms..

my trip to Bay of Fundy next summer is one of the reasons for my Jalousie install.

mine is used as a camper primarily. and I follow function over form in design.

but I still can't find the posts with the soffit vents, Ohh I recall now that they were a Pass van sliding window mod and not a westy avalable item.
*sorry.

For obvious reasons I am partial to installing jalousies to handle the rain. :D

I sleep with my pop top up and the window up there open in the rain. I have one of those rain fly's advertised here on the Samba. Keeps the rain out.

Also have the front windows down an inch or two and have the rain deflectors to keep the rain out and the air flow.

Jalousies ARE the answer, although I got slightly de-smugged during a really torrential downpour. The water hit the panels at maximum opening and the SPRAY bounced into Winston's interior.

Fixed with a very slight change in the elevation, though.

Best!

I know this was not your original question, but you can buy "wind and rain deflectors" for the front 2 windows from Eurocampers.com.

http://secure.mycart.net/catalogs/catalog.asp?prodid=4757906&showprevnext=1

I have a pair of these. Personally, I occasionally use them while camping in rain and not while driving, as I have to really pull hard on the delicate window crank mechanism to get the window up all the way while the deflectors are in place. Driving with the window down an inch or so leads to more road noise.

Overall, I prolly would not buy them again, but they are an option.

Funny you say that D......The link opened for me at work yesterday then I saw your post. Today at work, corporate security came up to my desk and confiscated my corporate desktop due to a Trojan Virus which coincided to the minute to the time that I clicked on that link. This caused all kinds of problems as our corporate machine has 5 users. I suspect that my Samba access will be no longer at work. FYI, we have excellent anti-virus software. SUCKS! DO NOT CLICK THAT LINK!~

Another reason why I only use Macintosh

Same happened to me, IT in my office paid me a visit for the same reason. Virus alert.

Soo could we all go in and edit our QUOTES so that the LINK it no longer a threat to anyone who reads this thread?

Good idea.

I tried clicking on it a few minutes ago on my Mac and it did/would not come up.

With all due respect to the poster, please try to get the info on here somehow.

FYI, It was a Trojan Worm/Malware. It Buggered up a perfectly good corporate Windows machine. I will be surfing TS on my 3"er and, though I am pretty used to this, surfing on a 3" really sucks

Best!
