I have what I think is a swing axle limited slip differential. Not sure who made it, any ideas? I have seen these for IRS trans but not for a swing axle, are these rare? good or bad?. Was this a factory option add on or strictly aftermarket?

Any help is appreciated.

Also any idea what this might be worth if I chose to sell it and not use it in one of my projects. I know it is a good unit since it came out of a good used trans.

Are they rare? What would they come in originally? I think I read somewhere that IRS ones came in some Thing's?

I'll give you $20 plus shipping for it, really it depends on the condition of the internal friction plates as to what its worth, they do pop up in the classifieds from time to time. I have seen them advertised for $200, sometimes more, sometimes less. There is one in the classified now but at $1200 and unknown condition it'll stay there a while longer yet.

I've had modern (plasma-sprayed) friction discs made for IRS VW ZFs, but I don't know anyone who's had Swingaxle ZF discs made yet.

I gave $600 for one a couple of years ago. I've never seen them anywhere near $200.

I have to agree with this! I too have never seen one (even in bad shape) for less than $500 and I've always been cautious about carrier bearing interference fit on the housing and the cost of rebuilding one of those units. I assume you can have most any VW trans shop get a rebuild kit for one of these (or go straight to ZF?)? Look in the classifieds and you won't seen any for $200 (more like $1000-1600). Of course, you can always ask what you want for something, but getting that amount is another story!

On the contrary. I don't think you'll find a single trans shop that has the new parts required for a true rebuild on these, including the ZF factory. However, for a bit more money than a worn out ZF, you can get a brand new (and far more robust) solid 8620 billet swingaxle LSD that will never wear in the bearing area, and for which there will always be replacement discs, plates, and other bits.
