For My 16th birthday I got a Vw Westfalia. Which was really funny cause a month before, I had no idea what one was. I just knew I wanted a classic car that is cool and is fun, and I love camping so that was a plus. I looked and looked and finally found one, But it was completely rusted to crap and over priced. so finally while I was gone on vacation across the country I was surprised over facetime with a 1971 Westy! SO now Iam redoing the car and preferably want to make it as original as possible. I am in search of parts and need help on some.
The original color is white and it was ghetto painted yellow but I want to keep the outside yellow and the inside a stock white. I want original color seats and wood.

Missing Parts List
Center stool
rear mosquito net
Cot
Top hold down mechanism
Fridge side rack and table

Ill Just update the list as I feel

Nice birthday gift. You know what they say once you catch the bug you can't get rid of it. Here is a link to owners manuals. Good Luck

Found that to be very true with my bug. And once you catch the bus you can't get rid of it either. There's a friendly great local young guy with a split window camper. He's 34 and has had his bus half his lifetime. He's so happy and proud of it now you'd think it was his first car.

Right now I have the bus basically striped of almost all interior and some front lights. Im discovering missing things and a lot of RUSt. Most of the rust is on the front. on the bottom where the windshield sits and behind the bumper on the front of the bus and bottom. The other main places of rust is the rear 3 windows, all the floors except the back and between the seats so I need to order all this. The roof had a bit of rust but I fixed that all ready.

Iam also looking for this piece

If anyone can help me find it or give me a name it would help.

Its a wasps nest! :D I take it you mean the Top hold down mechanism. Nice bus by the way. My fist bus looked as rusty as that. I had some great memories in it. Whats nicer is that it was not my last bus.
They are not all show cars. Sometime they get so nice you don`t want to use them. Have fun.

Do you weld?

RedHeadedJosh Mon Aug 22, 2011 8:54 pm

No But I have a friend that is real good at welding I have a MIG welder but I am a rookie at it. :( . The hard part is finding all the pieces. I know about bus depot , go westy, ect Im looking for websites that are more low profile that have good parts and different things. Like does any one know if they sell the inside part to that lower nose panel? Thats where it rusted the most. Thanks Guys who posted Help!

If anyone knows where to get about a 6in lower windshield panel , I would like to know! I found a website but there down right now, Thx.

RedHeadedJosh Thu Aug 25, 2011 8:16 pm

:?: so I have been killing rust this past week and finding more and more.

Is there anywhere you can order this strip that holds the cover panel on? :?:
I was thinking about taking the old one off so I can kill more rust and the old one is really weak.

Westfabulous Thu Aug 25, 2011 8:23 pm

I've never had to replace panels, but there is a guy named Gerson, who everyone speaks very highly of. He makes patch panels that are high quality. Search his name and I'm sure you'll find some info.

RedHeadedJosh Thu Aug 25, 2011 8:25 pm

Thanks But i know Gerson, He is the guy at Klassic Fabs in columbia.

I was wondering if anyone knew where to get them cheaper in the US?

that is a steal. i know you are what, 16? i got my first bus when i was 11, a 62 non sunroof deluxe and parts back 1990 were pricey to an 11 year old. buy the BEST you can. i have been in your shoes, so i know you want the bus done, but take your time. every single thing you do will reflect the resale value. fix it right and be done with it. click my 'click here' in my sig line. the rust on your bus is a cake walk.

i just spent 300+ for rockers for my 71 that i will be doing this winter. DO NOT buy anything other than Gerson. his stuff is soooooo nice, fits, and looks 100% OE. you have a real good solid bus (by my connecticut standards) that NO ONE 'tried' to repair. i will buy a rusty, un repaired bus before i buy some hacked together one that looks good.

skills@eurocarsplus Sat Aug 27, 2011 7:48 am

here is a good start for your rust needs. i have used the WW inner and outter nose parts and they fit fine. i hate their rockers, too thin and wrong lip profile for the drains, but rear corners and battery trays are pretty decent. their jack points are pretty nice as well.

your crusty rear window panels may need to be patched or grafted in from a donor, i have never seen any repair panels for those areas.

RedHeadedJosh Sat Aug 27, 2011 1:43 pm

What goes behind the lower nose skin? its rusted mostly behind it

What a project for such a young person. Though it sounds like you have a lot of friends to help you. It is going to take a long time to do what I have seen. What about the engine, running gear, tranny, wiring. Becarefull where you buy your window seals they can be a bitch if you get the wrong compound ones, they will not streach that well. I would hire someone to put the front windshield in. I hope you have a excellent front windshield. They could be hard to find.

Have you check the top canvas? They could be very hard to put in.

Good Luck and you have come to the right place SAMBA for help and parts. NO BETTER PLACE.

Mine is a 71 Weekender with all that I have done to it at my friends prices. I figure I have spent close to $6,000 and then some. Mine was in a lot better shape than yours and that includes the engine, tires, brakes, paint.

The Engine and tranny , to my knowledge is in good running condition. I believe the engine was rebuilt a few years back, It runs good and I have drove it for practice. I have a good windshield its not original so its like new and I have the front seal. My canvas is crap. already taken off , but i need many panels to fix the body :-({|=
