What is the best exhaust paint and primer for heater exchangers and muffler? Does BBQ grill paint work?[/list]

EastWood has some really good Hi-Temp paint in several colors, I find it works well for exhaust- just follow the directions and let it cure. I've never had good luck with the BBQ paint- of course your local autozone should have some Hi-Temp paint, but quality is questionable.

Check the label- if it says good up to 1,200* F you should be good with almost any Hi-Temp paint.

My 2 cents

John Deere muffler and exhaust paint. Last's better than anything I've tried including POR Hi-Temp and VHT.

Depends how you apply it. I don't think you'll get the same quality out of a rattle can as something you can spray with a gun.

I used a ceramic Techline product, Cilgen Satin Black. Turned out nice, but you need a detail gun to spray it. Good thing is it air cures. Here's a pic:

Out of curiosity, how long did the VHT paint last compared to the John Deere paint?

VHT lasts about 8 months.

Wow. I'm surprised it burns off that fast.

Rust comes through actually.

I imagine that's more of a problem with the muffler than the paint then...

Sounds about right. I would imagine that a 2000degF paint/primer should last longer than a year if cured as per instructions on the can.

Anyone else out there use this stuff?

On my exhaust it does not seem like the heat effects the VHT paint it's where it gets the most exposure from wind and rain.

Well that's goofy. Is it proud or something that water/air can penetrate and begin corrosion under the paint, or do you think it was more of a prep problem?

When the exhaust was brand new I painted it. After it rusted in the most exposed areas I sandblasted it and painted it again. Rust is comming through once more.
