| I see adds whith busses advertised that have "big nut transmissions" What's the big deal? what are the advantages to these transmissions if any? And another question, are safari windows best installed before a complete re-paint, or can they be installed at any time without damaging the finish of the window channels. thanks. |

| Big Nut trannies are geared higher for a little better highway speeds. This is a result of the "big" 1500 engine that was put into later splits to replace the early 36hp. Correct me if I'm wrong bus guys. |

| Two types of trannies,1200 and 1500. Some differences are Bigger Brake Drums on 1500.The whole brake shoe set-up and adjustment is different. 1200(small nut)has a 9inch rear drum, and 1500 has a 9.7inch rear drum. The way these reduction boxes are set up and taken apart, my manual shows two different ways. I have both kinds(1200 and 1500 buses) and have had problems with parts people who don't know of or about 1200 buses. Some after market manuals(clymer,chiltons..)Don't show all tranny types. I have a 1964 German Workshop Manual.. PEACE |

My early '64 deluxe has the small nut redux. boxes.
My Official VW 60-64 transporter manual shows the small nut up to Chassis VIN #1222025
My VIN is #1170435, so it looks to be accurate. |

| The big nut had a faster ratio ie lower engine rev's for the same speed. 1.33 to 1.25 if I remember right. |

Small Nut 32mm
Big Nut 42mm
there is a differance in the "Nut Sizes"
the small nut has the same nut size as a bug the big nut only fits on big nut axles.
sorry if im wrong on my nut sizes...i think im correct.......its been a while since i had to whip out my nuts and take a look at em :)
and yes the big nut trannies have a taller gear ratio. which is also best when geared up with a 3:88 rp!

My early 64 Panel has a big nut tranny with 15 inch wheels and pull out door handles and a big rear window. Install the Safari's before the repaint, You have brackets to weld in on the inside which would ruin your
paint in that area. |
