The deck lid should be held on by hinges that are screwed to the body. Two on each side. The hinges are welded to the deck lid frame.

huh? the decklid hinges are not welded to the decklid unless they were broken off in the past and somebody welded them back on. the hinges are held onto both the body and decklid with 6mmx12mm tapered head phillips screws, 4 per side (2 on body, 2 on decklid). they can be a real pain in the ass to get out, and often break or strip the "phillips" part of the head. get a screwdriver that fits very well into the head of the screw and is not loose at all when you try to wiggle it, (i think a #3 works the best), tap the screwdriver and/or screw with a hammer to hopefully loosen it a little, use penetrating oil, and exert alot of pressure up/downwards into the screw head when trying to loosen. hopefully yours won't be a super pain, but i've removed ones from very rusty busses with good success. patience is key.
