Hey Guys, I recently bought this 1996 Jetta GLS from a friend of mine for $300. It has the 2.0L engine and manual 5-speed gear box and about 200,000 miles. He was driving it on a regular basis 6 months ago until one day he parked it in his driveway and couldn't start it again. He is not very mechanical so it has sat since then. A local scrapyard told me they would give me $370 based upon it's weight, so I figured I have nothing to lose if I can't manage to get it running. Also, it has a new battery installed in it and needs a center muffler because the old one rusted out and fell down so it was dragging: http://www.autohausaz.com/search/product.aspx?sid=.../Resonator

My dad, brother and I towed it home the other day, and upon attempting to start it, just for the heck of it, it ran very poorly for about 5 seconds or so, with my dad feathering the gas pedal. After that though it would not restart.

I started yesterday by plugging in my OBD II scanner and got the following error codes:

PO300 - Random / Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
PO302 - Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected
PO303 - Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected
PO304 - Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected
PO341 - Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

I figured I would start by replacing the plugs, so I went out and bought a set of new Bosch Ylitrium 7927 Spark Plugs, gapped them to .028" and installed them. The old Autolite Plugs that were installed were very black and fouled and smelled of gas.

After installing the plugs I attempted to start the car. It sounded like it fired for a second or two when I turned the key the first time, but after that I got nothing.

I also took out the air filter element. It smelled a little bit like gasoline but looked to be in good shape. I kept it out of the car to let it dry for awhile.

I'm thinking next I should drain the gas considering it is months old. The tank is about half full (around 7 gallons or so??) What is the best away of going about this? (I am used to my '74 beetle where all I have to do is unbolt the tank and lift it out :) )

Also, how can I check to ensure that I am getting fuel at the throttle bottle? Do I simply disconnect the fuel line at the engine and turn the ignition on to let the fuel pump?

Any advice and recommendations on how to proceed is welcome!

Also, I forgot to mention that the driver's door lock is messed up (it has been pushed into the door or removed altogether). My friend who I bought it from mentioned that someone he talked to thought this might be a problem. I remember reading something online that said the the driver's door lock is wired as part of the security system, and that if it doesn't work it can cut electric to the fuel pump. Can anyone confirm this?

Ok I will try and help you as much as possible. I dont think it is the gas, if you did not see a change in the way it has been running with new plugs, it could be the coil pack, they are known to go bad, it could also be old wires. The door latch mechanism has to due with the fuel pump, what it does it when you open the door it primes the fuel pump so you dont have a prolong start up. if it is jsut the lock rock that is pushed in that will just keep you from locking the door not a a problem with running or starting. Your also going to want to look for a air leak, there are many vacuum lines that could be broken or cracked, check them or just replace them on the safe side and another thing that could cause it to run poorly is your MAF or a mass air flow sensor. good luck on getting it running
