I am going to California to pick up a 66 D/cab, 1600 dual port. I will then be driving to Colorado and taking her to an elevation of 9000ft. I'm sure that she will start running worse as I gain elevation, is there anything I should/could do to help her run better as I gain elevation.I'm not necessarily looking for a permanent solution as come November we are moving to Cali and I will be towing it back behind the moving truck.

thanks!!

i think it's just a matter of changing the carb jets, but i don't know sizes, etc.

Hi I live and drive at 7,000 feet every day. I have not changed the jets in my stock carb, interesting option could be messy on the roadside... For every 1,000 feet above 4,000 feet advance the timing on your distributor by 1 degree. At 7,000 feet I have been running with my timing set at 10 degrees static advance (engine not running). I've also run my bus to Chicago and back to California a half dozen times and never really adjusted except for a short stretch of about 200 miles in Wyoming. So you may be satisfied with the performance and let it be. Don't change the advance just because you are at 9,000 feet change it when you notice performance lagging. Tim

I agree with Tim. I'm assuming you are going over a few passes and then into a lower elevation. I'm in Denver as I write and have noticed no difference in performance and I was at or near sea level yesterday. I will be climbing the passes on Monday and will post if I notice a huge performance loss (beyond the obvious in climbing steep grades rapidly).

Just returned from West Yellowstone to San Luis Obispo Ca. and for me it was a matter of advancing timing a few degrees (7.5 to 10.5) and adjusting the idle a bit. She never skipped a beat...sea level to 10,400 ft in 72 hrs. Whatta blast.
PS...sorry to all the broken down Ford Exploders in Yellowstone Park...next time buy a VW:)

hahaha...Well, yea, driving across country ina 1600DP '64 westy...well, we adjusted as we felt needed, you can feel a difference, and alls we did was advance the timeing, i have heard the of the jet changing, but if you're just driving through, no need...but I woul suggest, if you're going to be there, to change it, you could increase fuel economy and HP. I'd be interested in seeing some of the results if/when you do get it to the Highlands...Good luck!
