I've got two carburetors that have been giving be problems. Both are original German Solex and both have been rebuilt. One is a 30mm and the other 34mm.

The 30mm runs fine and doesn't leak but there is no change when I try to adjust the volume screw. I noticed during the rebuild that the end of the screw was not pointy but flat. It didn't look crushed or cut but just to make sure I went to a junkyard to get a different one thinking it would have a pointed end but it was also flat ended. It was the only 30mm carb they had that looked like mine so I'm still not convinced that flat is they way it's supposed to be. The thing is though, I've got the screw all the way in and it still runs rich which causes it to run bad when cold. My question on this is, is the needle supposed to be flat on the end or pointed or is there something else wrong with this carb?

The 34mm carb is sucking in too much air. At first it was leaking around the lower linkage (which I guess is common) so I got that fixed. This made the carb run better but it's still far from good. I did some more spraying with the carb cleaner and found another leak where the two halves meet. Took that apart and put some sealant on it and put it back together. It doesn't seem to leak there now either but it's still getting too much air. I know this by putting my hand over the top of the carb and it revs up and stays smooth until I pull my hand away. I've tried to adjust the volume and bypass but there is no change. Any ideas? I'm beginning to think it's junk though.

They could very well be junk, sometimes, they just go... I'd deffinitly check your choke....I worked on my dads all day yesterday, and noticed that the choke was not adjusted, as soon as I did that...it ran like a champ, so don't overlook that, even in warm weather, cause that'll make it run rich. check your Main Jet....If someone changed it say, for a larger exhaust, then it could be running way to rich for a stock exhaust, or they coulda just been trying to get more power, and jacked things up. Most of the time i just unscrew my Mixture screw(small ones) 2.5-3 turns out. And then kinda just turn the big one out and in, till you find a spot right between where the rpm's change, or stop changing, etc... check your Acclerator pump too, this is ALWAYS over looked, hold your carb up in the air, with the float bowl full, and pull the throttle wide open, if it didn't make a straight stream of gas all over your feet, it's not working right...
Check your Intake too...If there's an air leak in it, then it's gonna be screwy....always! It usually makes an unever idle.
Another thing, timing, you need to have your car timed right, and your points adjusted properly...just make sure of that!
Good luck!
