| I have a 65 Westy and 1500 single port, that after being loaded with camp gear,kid,dog, wife, etc.., likes to run HOT. Everyone I ask locally has a different opinion of cooling tecnics...I have a new external cooler floating around and also most of a doghouse..also is there a way to tap into the block (oil pump) without machining? please the more opinions or facts - the better! thanks |

Well, I've been having the same problem...first things first...make sure your engine is PROPERLY tuned...might sound ok, but make sure everything is top notch...if you're running a header, get your carb rejeted...I just did that to mine, enlarged it from 120 to 122.5, and i'm 10 degrees cooler...most people go up 5-7 though, i only went up 2.5 I've heard that improper jetting can make your engine 30 degrees hotter, but who knows...
Got an 009? Make sure it's timed right, or you'll REALLY be hot. Make sure fan belts good, engine tins in place, seal...etc.etc... Run some thick oil...I run 10W 40, some people run even thicker...but I don't about that, cause of the oil cooler. Check out the performance forum, there's lots of tips through out all those. Oh, and another thing, there are full flow Pumps, that just have 2 outlets, an in and out, but you have to be careful not to make your oil too cold. check out this site. for some help.

Have you still got a thermostat & flaps connected. lot of people rip them out. A VAG dealer told me they are a waste of time ?? Only good for a faster warmup in winter.
but i read they direct more air over the heads increasing cooling by up to 10%
Bay I had was having problems in summmer. quess what No flaps. fiddly to fit but they are not there to look good. |
