i have a 58 single cab that i just converted from 6v to 12v.I purchsed a full wiring harness from wiring works, and the instructions state that i should use all 8 amps fuses. The guy at the local vw shop in town says that i should use a higher fuse for the headlights like a 12 and 15 for the brights. Please help me, some one give me some info on this problem, also i would like to add a stereo cd player later on down the road, what fuse would i use for this?????
P.S.i am using a generator instead of a altenator.P.S.S.I did change all my lights and bulbs to 12v. |

as far as the stereo, i would put it on it's own fuse with a dedicated wire from the battery terminal. that's how most good stereo installation kits come anyway. as long as you get one with an in-line fuse, ideally placed close to the battery, you don't need to tie in to the vehicle wiring. you can still put additional fuses for individual components if you're going that route. You can get a power distribution box that does this, but you can just tie in the power for the head unit (in-dash unit doesn't sound right) with the power amp and rely on the one fuse.
as for the headlights, if you're not blowing the 8 amp fuses "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" they're on 8 amp fuses for a 67 (factory 12v). did you put in super-plasma xeno-halogens or something? i guess beefy headlights might call for higher amp fuses. |

What a surprise, I get it all entered, get the message just perfect, hit enter and it says I am not logged in and it loses my entire message. <sigh> try this again.
I also have a '58 single cab with a 12v system, stereo installed, and running PIAA Extreme White H4 headlights.
My wiring may seem scary to some but it works so I do not complain.
Fuses: Blue is 25amp, red is 16amp, white is 8amp.
Looking at my fusebox, 8 fuse since it is 12v, vice the 6 fuse box.
Top is thin, bottom is fat. Going from left to right.
Blue, red, red, white, red, red, red, white.
First red, is the hot wires, #2 fuse block.
Stereo is spliced to hot wire with an in line fuse.
CD changer I have mounted behind the seat and also an amp mounted back there as well. Power wire for the amp I have directly to the battery, inline fuse is so more than 8 inches from the battery.
The headlights are bright as hell. No yellow in these, they look like fluorescent lights, that is how white they are. Only problem that I have with these lights is that occasionally, and I think I have this problem fixed, the left bulb low beam fuse block will occasionally melt causing me to replace the fusebox.
If photos may be needed I am sure I could help there as well.
Hope it helps.
Jax

| Thanks, still a work in progress. Next to do is the seats, heh. Then win the lottery and air bag suspension and porsche disc brakes up front. |

You guys are scaring me. I'm an electrician by trade and it sounds to me like you are trying to burn down your buses. Without getting into it too much I'll try to aid you in wire size and current draw. You can calculate what your fuse size should be by knowing what the draw is going to be. Electrical 101: Voltage x current draw = Watts for eg. 12V x 4A =48W. concequently the opposite is true A 55W low beam running on a 12V system will draw: 55/12 = appox 4.58A. does this make sense?
Any questions feel free to email me |

Can't email you with mowser or just email me, hehe. Sorry. The only reason these fuses are the way they are is: 1) Most were that way when I got my T2. 2) At one point I prolly ran out of fuses and stuck something else in. I know that they are wrong but I could only answer with what I had.
If I knew the correct fuse amperage placement, I would put those in. |
