View original topic: How do you remove the speedometer?

Need to get my speedometer out to do a little rehab on the idiot lights. Do you just make a stab in the dark and try to loosen the two screws on the sides then twist the speedo? Do I need to disconnect all before doing this or can I unhook the connections after pulling it out?

Thanks

Doug

Forgot to mention that this speedo is on my '63 deluxe.

Thanks,

Doug

be safe!you have to remove map shelf and dont make any conection with fuse box.the speedo is one tight fit allso easyier to remove once shelf is lowerd down or out.I think its just 5 or 6 screws holding shelf to front of bus.good luck!!

Remove the map shelf? That's a lot of work. I think you can get a mirror under there, locate the two screws and undo that puppy.

I must agree with 58vwtruck.
The "map shelf" (parcel tray, whatever) must be loosened so the speedometer can be removed. It will not fit in the gap between the dash and the tray otherwise. I recommend dropping the entire tray for better access to the speedometer screws, wires, etc. It may sound like alot of work but I find it much easier than fishing under the dash for an hour and knocking wires loose or breaking old connections.

You definitely have to remove the map shelf, it just makes the whole process easier. I would also highly recommend that you disconnect your battery cable. My first (and only) bus fire happened when I replaced my speedo. Because of the tight space and all the exposed wires, it makes the entire work area more vulnerable to fire.

To uninstall, I would take all the wires off first then just take out the two nuts that hold it on and it should come right out. Getting it back on is a little tougher but it's the opposite of the uninstall.

Definately remove the shelf. I screwed around for almost an hour before I took the shelf out and removed the speedo in about 5 minutes. It may not twist out as easily as the repair books indicate. Mine had been in since new and I had to really yank on it to get it out. Be sure to remove all the wires first and mark 'em as to where they go.
