Yo All,

Last summer I bought a can of Por15 for my 66 westy restore. I have yet to get to the original primer coat. (someone maaco'd my bus with 6 layers of bubbilicious paint!) Anyways, I am wondering if anyone has por15'd their VW before getting it painted. If it works good and how it affects the final coat of paint. Any feedback would be great. I plan on doing all the floors, the door/window jams and the gutter, along with the wheels wells.

You must use POR15 intercoat primer if you plan to paint over it. If you don't the paint will fall off in no time.

be careful with that por15...don't go overboard...i used por15 on the gutter of my '58 bus and was not to happy with the way it smoothed out...i also used it on the front windshields on my '66, they were real solid before i put it on there and i thought that would be a good way to keep 'em solid, anyway, now they leak like no other now...por15 is a good thing, but only where you need it

so Roy,

You don't recommend it in those areas? Did you put it on too thick? Did you use the primer as bubblehead says? How did the paint turn out?

thx

If you thin it down and spray it through a gun it goes on like any high build primer but its still a bitch to sand. I'd only use it for underside floors and such. Or to neutralize some heavy rust til a more permanent (ie cut it out) repair can be made. If your looking for a nice paint job skip the POR, strip to bare metal, remove non surface rust, etch the metal, etch prime, then primer/paint. POR15 does what it says but its use is limited if your set on a quality resto.
