View original topic: Coker Tire Firestone Wide Oval Tires?

Ok... so, on their way to me are a set of Flat-4 BRMs (5"/F & 6.5"/R) along with a pair of 145R15 Firestone F560s. Building my ’66 sedan on a “Cal-look” design platform, therefore the right stance is critical to me. I hadn’t ordered my rear tires yet - I was set on going with 205/70R/15s wrapped around the 6.5” BRM reps. I wanted the front tires to “match” the rears (I’m chronically OCD), but I could only find Firestone FR710 or FR380 with WHITE sidewalls – I need black! So, I remembered back in the day… my dad use to run Firestone Wide Ovals on our vintage Mustangs (’65, ’66 coupes & a ’69 Mach 1) as well as on my dad’s old ’65 Cal-look – this was all back in the early ‘80s. Anyhoo, I recently thumbed through an edition of Ultra VW and came across an article on Fabien Becasse’s (of DKP fame) beautiful ’67 sedan... and whadya know – Fabien chose to wrap a set of original 2-pc Empis in Firestone Wide-Ovals! Love the look! While I understand he has a hipo motor to actually TURN his wheels, my ’66 sedan will have a big motor/trans dropped in next spring and for now, I can deal with the slow acceleration on the current mild street 1600dp.

I searched the forums for “Firestone Wide Ovals” but did not find anyone reporting on these tires. My other option is stick with 205/70/15s from another manufacturer... Any feedback out there for me?

It kind of depends on if your concern is primarily " the look" as opposed to the ride. Our buggy had a set of wide ovals on it and it road like a truck. Changed over to radials and its night abnd day. Take a look at Diamondback for "vintage" style tires as well as Universal.
