I was wondering if it is a model year the distinguishes if a bus has round side rear view mirrors or "elephant ear" side rear view mirros. If so what year exactly?
I know all really early buses have round rear view mirros but it seems like it becomes split between round and "elephant ear" at some point.
Thanks,
Chris |

| You know what Chris, I think it is either 62 or 63, but I would like to know *for sure* also, for my own knowledge. Anyone know about this one? |

Chris,
It is my understanding that all "elephant ear" mirrors were an option put on by dealers here in the states. VW of America made the original "elephant ear" mirrors. I don't know the year they were an option. If you are bent on being 'correct' on your bus, the round mirrors are the ones. I have the "elephant ear" style on my '63 and don't care for the way they vibrate while driving. I am considering going back to the round ones if I can't fix the vibration problem.

| Hey thanks for the replies. I was really just wondering because I have purchased a bus that I have only seen in pictures and the owner isn't exactly sure what year it is although she thinks it is a 1964. I am have been trying to find year defining items in the pictures but they are only exterior shots and were taken at bad angles. I was hoping that the round rear view mirros might indicate the year. It is probably a 1964. |
