I wanted to recieve some input from people who built an engine for their VW for the first time. It is a project I am interested in, but at the same time I am pretty skeptical. Any input?

Thanks. Jake.

I've never cracked open a case but the pistons, cylinders and heads are a piece of cake. You will need a torque wrench to do the job right.

My friend says the case isn't too difficult though.

Jake, the case is not difficult once you get it open and familliar with it, putting the halves back together without any problems is probably the hardest part. If you do split the case, take it to a machine shop and have them clean the case and internal parts, cam, crank, lifters, etc. (called magnaflux'ing, I think) cleaned and inspected beforehand if you plan on re-using them, and also have them machine anything that is neccesary (new bearings and etc) before you put it back together. I'm sure if you take it to a reputable shop they will know what to do and you should be ok. Listen to the guy who does your work and ask lots of questions before and after the job, thats how I learned my first time. It's really not hard at all, and I'm sure you will have even more appreciation for your VW after you spend the time to do it yourself, plus you save quite a bit and know exactly what you have in your motor! Good luck with your project!

I have built three engines. All are still working. I purchased VW repair manuals at used book stores. I also purchased the Bug Me Video tape on Engine Rebuild Volume 3. 1-800-662-0071. The video is very good and will give you the basic information you will need to rebuild an engine. The video along with several good books and a local machine shop or VW repair shop willing to respond to a few questions is all you need. I have obtained some special tools that do help with the rebuilding process. Take your time,do not rush yourself. Label everything you take apart the first time. You will get a great deal of satisfaction when you start the engine for the first time. You will also have a tendency to take better care of the engine

Good luck and have fun.

Definately build it yourself. No one cares more about how your motor runs and lasts more than you do. The feeling of pride and accomplishment when it comes to life the first time is teriffic!! My tech site has an entire series of engine build/re-build pages with tons of photos which you may find helpful. Good luck!! YOU CAN DO IT!!!
