Does anyone know what the "6" on the "2116" on the vin # stand for? I know the
211 stands for panel. But I ko not know what the 6 stands for. I know it has
something to do with the type of paint (laquer, etc.).
thanks for the help.

Is this off the M-code plate behind the front seat?
I've only seen 1-3:
1 = Vehicle supplied in Primer
2 = Nitro-Lacquer finish
3 = Synthetic resin finish
I'd be interested to see the contents of your entire M-code plate. |

I have panel that came with a steering/ignition
lock, sliding cargo door. I found this info.
in the archives provided by this wabsite. I
was also able to get the color paint and
apholstery color. I was able to get all this,
including the month, day and year it was built,
by looking up the numbers off my M-code plate.
The only number I was not able to decode was
the "6" of the 2116.
thanks. |

I do not have the M-code info with me, as
I left my panel at home. I'm driving my 71
transporter today. Do you know what makes
a 71 bus deluxe? Is it the chrome around
the waist? thank you. |

| Yes, that sounds right. I think the Deluxes had a nicer interior too? I don't know too much about Bay Window Buses. |

according to the laurence meredith book vw bus 1950 - 1979 it depends if you are reading the chassis number or the m number plate. the 21 is a panelvan, but depending on which tag you are reading the "1" could mean one of two things: part of the date of manufacture or color (but if it's the color, it should be prefaced by a letter - L360/12 is sea blue for a '67). i'm new to this myself, but maybe this helps.
with regards to your '71. you are right. the de luxe had a chrome vw badge, fresh air grille,window frames, and a waistline strip. see page 75 of the meredith book. good luck. |

| I have been researching and collecting paint plate infor for many years and there always seems to be that oddball number that shows up on one plate and then I never see it again. how does the entire plate read? my 63 deluxe the model/paintfinish number is 2410. I have never seen the 0 number on any other bus. the 63 was a special order german delivered bus that was built with some unusual options, but I have not been able to determine anything different about the paint which is what that number refers to. |
