i know those slats in the back are to let air in but i wonder if it would be better to make an air scoop where they were

TimGud Fri Oct 25, 2002 9:20 pm

I have been told they do not help but actually restrict the amount of air that can be sucked into the vents.

I've heard the same

Black Hawk Fri Oct 25, 2002 11:56 pm

what i mean would to take out the slats and put a big whole with a scoop

Cutting it definetly won't work. If your engine is getting too hot there is something wrong with the engine setup (engine tins, timing, carb, etc...). Fix that and you won't need to cut anything or to add scoops.

Cutting the slats, making a big hole, and/or adding air scoops won't aid cooling and will make your van look horrible.

if your bus is properly tuned and set up right, all the rubber is in place etc it should be running at it's ideal operating temperature. don't cut your bus, more than likely, someone else will end up having to weld it back up.

I'd have to agree with the guys above.

However, if you really want to do it, you should check this site out:

Someone on the VW Shop forum carefully measured head & oil temperature on the Type II -- with scoops, without scoops, with reversed scoops, etc. He found that the scoops lowered head & oil temperature significantly.

My local VW shop swears that scoops will lower the temperature at higher speeds. The reason is he said, is at high speed, the fan has a harder time sucking in cool fresh air through the stock vents do to pressure changes. The air is more likely to pass over the vents instead of going into the engine compartment. I guess you could argue this because look what the bay windows have on them. Yup, scoops. Unfortunately, scoops are ugly and a lot of people don't like them. I, for one, fall into that category.

Thanks for not making a fool of me, guys! I can't believe I posted the wrong link (I had too many browser windows open). Anyway, one MORE time:
