View original topic: Disc Brakes? Anything new out there for a bus?
olvwnut@yahoo.com Sat Oct 26, 2002 7:48 am

I've always dreamed of disc brakes, at least for the front of my bus. I've considered the '68 ball joint change out (I have a '63 panel) and then changing out the drums to the later discs, changing the master cylinder to the dual (maybe even the servo)and then some guy tells me that there is a way to do it and to keep my wide 15's. But he doesn't know where he read the article. He said you could just bolt on the disc kit and that was it. Don't discs need a better master cylinder to make them effective?

check with wolfgang int. they have a kit setup to use their spindles, and later(73^)rotors calipers pads etc. then all you need is the dual chamber master cyl and some wide five adapters (that they make). I saw it at vegas bug o rama. its expensive but pads and parts are cheaper and available. those guys know busses.

Thanks bmx2c4me,

I'll check Wolfgang out. Has anyone out there installed this kit? Do the wide five adapters put you too close to the body to run 205/15's?

Thanks,

Creative Engineering has a wide 5 bus disk brake kit. I believe Ronnie at oldvolks in Arizona can order the kit as well.

CSP has a wide five kit that bolts on. I've seen the wolfgang kit, uses the small 5 VW pattern, different from Porsche, and I have the 944 fronts and 944 rears on my bus. There are a few places that can machine the 944 parts to work. I think It cost me about $500 for front and rear discs, Porsche pattern. As for the master cylinder you can go a few ways. I used the 944 master cylinder. I put the resevoir on backwards and made an extension for bolting it in, the plunger is different, and fit a rubber boot over it. Everything is bolt in and easily reversable. You can also use an early bus master cylinder, you have to remove the residual valve though or you can switch to a late model dual circuit cylinder
