I've seen this post in the past but never paid much attention to it because it didn't affect me. I have the original radio in my dash (doesn't work but looks good) and I want to put a CD player in. Do I install it right under the original radio in the parcel shelf or hang it (I know, I would have to drill some holes) in one of those generic CD/Stereo bracket boxes under the dash? Is one way better than the other for any reason other than esthetics? Is there a particular mounting box that looks less offensive than others?
Thanks,

I put my radio in the dash tray and took an underdash mount kit and turned it around backwards to make it work. It looked and worked great, until someone stole the entire thing (again). I suppose my next Tech Tip should be how to install an alarm. I have to make another dash kit, but this time I'll photograph the entire process. The directions and a pic of the finished product are located at:

Thanks 23,
I was concerned about the ease of getting it ripped off, but was wondering about the need for space in the package shelf. Still can't make up my mind.

I like it hanging below the parcel shelf, as close to the steering column as possible. The shifter gets a little close to it, but it leaves more room in the parcel shelf for cd's and four small holes in the shelf for mounting isn't a mortal sin. Plus it allows you the standard access to the wiring under the dash if you need to get to something there. My two cents...

Mine is just sitting in the parcel tray. There isn't a huge problem with crime in my town, so i don't worry much about it being stolen. And if I need to get under the dash, I just unhook the connector for the wiring from the back, pull out the antenna, and I can get to it.
