View original topic: Correct Taillight Wiring...?

I replaced the bulbs in taillights of my 64 today after I realized one had burnt out, and something didn't seem right.

Mine is currently set up with single-filament bulbs for the brake/turn signals (smaller, upper portion of the taillight housing) and dual-filaments for the running lights (lower, larger part of the housing). This seems rather counter-intuitive, no?

The dual-filaments have staggered posts, so I can't switch the bulbs. I seem to remember the 63 Bus I had as being different...

Thanks in advance.

That's weird, my tail lights only have one bulb each in them and they are the dual filament kind. It sounds like you might have aftermarket tail lights or something. In every wiring diagram that I have ever seen, there are only two wires that go to the lights. One for the running lights and the other for the turn signal/ brakes.

Derek,

I remember seeing that configuration somewhere online. I believe the dual tail ligh was on some European models.

If you have 2 bulbs in each taillight than they are european, The top bulb should be single filament for the turn signal only, The bottom should be dual filament for the brake light and the taillight, You can find a wiring diagram at Vintagebus.com.
