Everything you need including the terminal numbers is on the wiring diagrams at http://www.vintagebus.com/

Let me help see if I can shed some light on this one. While Vintagebus has the diagram (thank you Thom Fitzpatrick for such a sweet site!) the diagram does not explain all.

I have a 1964 type 2, and posted this exact same question a couple of weeks back. Unfortunately I had to seek help via (shh) another ng.

I was able through google.rec.autos.makers.vw.aircooled ng to recieve some advice from gentlemen named Speedy Jim. Check out the full thread at:
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&...26rnum%3D1

Check out his website (http://www.nls.net/mp/volks/) for some really helpful wiring info for your volksie. He also posted this image:
http://www.nls.net/mp/volks/schem/bus_4way.gif
that explains the actual terminal comnnections for the flasher and the relay for the 1964 bus.

The magical key was the terminal designation in this diagram. MY ADVICE: go to your local quality parts store and but a 5 terminal emergency relay with the EXACT designations that are in Speedy Jim's diagram (30, 85, 86, 87, 87b). I tried for days to get my flashers to work, only to discover that I had it wired correctly, and I was using the wrong relay. Oh yeah, if they try to charge you $25 for the relay, you've got the right one!

To conclude, I still do not have my turn signals working 100%. If you notice in the daigram that the terminal indications are S and K for the 3 prong flasher (diagram shows that 1 terminal is for ground)yet no store (that I can find) sells a flasher with the designation
of S and K. Vintagebus shows a cross reference of S and K to 49a and C respectively. Still can't find one of those. Of the standard three prong flashers that I try, the problem I get is that the flasher indicator light in the speedo is on when the turn signals are off, and then flashes off when they are on! Something's not quite right there. The indicator light is groung by default when installed properly in the speedo casing. The proper flasher should not deliver juice to the indicator with the flashers are not on.

Good luck,
runyan

Oh yeah, in answer to your second question. For your 64 single cab, I believe you should use the 1962-1965 (USA or Non-USA depending)wiring diagram on Vintagebus

i found this website thru an ad in the latest hot vws magazine. ive been trying to solve the mystery of fixing the emergency lights but have had no luck whatsoever. especially trying to figure out that damn 9pin relay...forget it. this looks like it will solve the problem.

scroll all the way to the bottom for "vw 4way flasher.

does anyone know anything about these? i was thinking of using this thing and rewiring the toggle switch to the original pull knob on the dash?
