Sooo.... who out there has rebuilt their own carbs? I have a leaky accelerator pump and am considering doing the job myself. You can talk me out of doing it myself with a good referral in the San Diego area for someone who will rebuild it affordably. Or you can talk me into doing it myself by directing me to a good shop with the right kit and detailed instructions.

| If it's a stock Solex, then you can get a rebuild kit for around $10 at any VW shop. They are a cinch to work on too. No too many small parts to keep track of. Just clean all the orifices and jets and get the gunk out of the chamber and you're pretty much done. |

Yeah, its stock. I have this fear that is just can't be that easy. I really don't want to end up stranded, or worse yet, run my engine too lean.
I have seen the rebuild kits and they are rather attactively priced.
It looks like the jets screw in until tight, but are there any mixture adjustments that need to be made? If so, how? How do I know when it is dialed in? |

The jets do go in until tight, that is correct. It is really easy, like I said, because there are not that many little parts to clean and deal with. As long as it's put back together the right way and everything has been cleaned (I would recommend soaking it in carb cleaner for a few days), you shouldn't have any problems unless something is actually wrong with the carb.
Setting up your carb is pretty easy after you rebuild too. It will take some trial and error but it's not too difficult to get the hang of it.
To adjust a Solex carb, start by turning the smaller volume control screw all the way in (to the right)until it just touches. Then pull back out about two to three complete turns. If you have a larger bypass screw (this adjusts the idle), turn it all the way in and then back out about 1.5 turns. Start the engine and let it warm up completely. Then turn the volume screw counter clockwise slowly until you achieve the maximum rpm's from the engine at idle, then turn to the right until it drops slightly. Adjust the idle as needed with the bypass screw and there you go. |

Also, I would ad to Mikes good advise.... if the carb is running fine now, you could always just replace the leaking accel diaphram.... sometimes the plate with the 4 screws gets warped and sometimes the screw just need to be tightend up some....
If you do go to replace it run a semi fine file over the plate to make sure the surface is flat and tighen the screws in an even manner... ie not the first one or two too tight ect... then go around all four criss cross for final snug.... |
