Just installed my new transmission (had to get a new case) and my bus wouldn't start. It seems that the 12 volt flywheel is rubbing on the case. I know the tranny rebuilder knew I had a 12 volt flywheel, but must not have reamed out the case enough for clearance. Don't want to bring it back to him. I would rather remove the case material myself. What is the best way to do this?
Thanks,

I would bring it back to your transmission rebuilder.

a hand held air powered die grinder with a sharp cutter.just grind the areas where the flywheel made a mark. usually you have to do a couple of engine installation tries before you get it all.

If you dont have a die grinder here is a trick that will work. Loosen the engine mounting bolts and nuts and back the engine out till you can turn the engine at the lower pulley nut with a wrench. Then snug up the bolts and nuts by hand and turn the engine by hand one or two revolutions ,then turn the bolts and nuts in just a little more and repeat the process until the engine is bolted all the way up.If it wont turn back off just a bit on the nuts and bolts. After the engine is completely bolted back in start it up and run for about 5 minutes to finish the job. What this does is make the ring gear on the flywheel clearance the transaxle. After this is done pull out the engine clean out the filings and you are done.It sounds rediculous but it works.

I just have too ask...Do you have the correct pressure plate and TOB? Did you replace the tranny mounts and use the right size bolts that clears the flywheel?

he's putting a 12V flywheel into a 6V bellhousing. they don't fit unless you hog out the bellhousing.

Hogged out the bellhousing to clear the flywheel and reinstalled the engine. Still rubbed. Clutch made contact. Pissed off at Rancho Performance. They sold me a different bellhousing because the '67 I had was in bad shape. The '67 was obviously set up for the 12 volt flywheel so they knew that this housing they sold me had to be cleared the same. Called them and they said "bring the trans back and we'll do the work" -- yeh, after it's installed in my bus...

I had a similar problem. Sounded to me like you had the motor in. In which case its not the bellhousing clearance but something else.
Rancho has a pretty good rep..Thats why I thought it might be something else hanging up the motor and not as obvious as a 12volt
flywheel into a 6 volt housing. My problem turned out to be the pressure plate for some reason. I just tried a different style, one for a bus I believe. Good luck! |

if the bellhousing is not clearanced enough, the engine can be bolted to the trans, and still not be able to be turned. just pull it out again and look for the marks where it's still touching, and clearance it a bit more.

jwworkshop has a good point about seeing where the rub is. Hopefully its not in the pressure plate area.

The trick I mentioned above might save you alot of time in this case.
