View original topic: Gene Berg Dip Stick won't fit...

Tried to put a Gene Berg oil temp dip stick in and it's too long to fit. It hits my (previous owner) alternator. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Doug

Now that doesn't sound right. I have one in my bus and I have an alternator and it doesn't come any where near it. I think the problem might be in the plastic stopper. It need to come up to allow the dipstick to go all the way into the engine. The stick itself should only be about a foot long.

Mike,

Don't know much about alternators, but this one is very large in diameter and blocks the stick from going straight in.

The alternator does have a bigger face then a generator but still shouldn't block the dipstick from going in. I think I know what you might be talking about though. I do have to start at an angle to get the dipstick in to clear the alternator but it's only slightly in the way. Go at it from the left side of the alternator, inbetween it and the fuel pump. I think that's how I do it.

I'll give it a try today.

Scratch what I said before. I went out to my bus and pulled the dipstick out and put it back in. The dipstick comes very close to the alternator when I put it in straight, via the front of the alternator. If I move it a little to the right, it allows more room to get it down to the hole. Also I measured it and it's only 9" long. I could see if for some reason that yours is longer, that there could be a problem with it bending and rubbing on the front of the alternator as you push it further into the tube (if that make sense).

I've got one in my '58, which has a 1600dp with an alternator. I have no trouble taking it out/putting it in. I'm not sure why yours wouldn't fit.

Andrew,

I checked my engine/alternator against my friends today and it seems that my dip stick was drilled out in an angle that even makes getting the dip stick out kind of difficult. It is angled up instead of out towards the rear of the bus. I understand that there is another type of oil temperature unit available that uses the oil pressure light. I believe that it would have to be connected through a hole in the block and then work on the same principle as the Gene Berg. Has anyone heard of it?

Thanks,

Doug
