yes, it is possible to put a flier and retain the redux boxes. check out rancho performance - they seem to have one of the best rep's for fliers. i'm gong to go that route myself - i want to keep the stock height for my camper. rancho is at www.ranchoperformance.com

That's the route I'm going with my 13-window. I'll let everybody know how it turns out when I get it back from the rebuilder...whenever that is...

Just got my Rancho tranny and redux boxes rebuilt. Have the flyer with the higher 4th gear and it works great. I also have a 1776 with dual Kadrons to push it.

I've got a '66 E-Z Camper w/ a FF (3.88 R&P w/ stock .082 bus 4th gear) and redux boxes installed. I too have a 1776 to push it and love it. Highly recommended!

From what I've heard, a 1600 dp/sp is about the bare minimum for pushing along a bus with a freeway flyer. I will only have that problem for a couple months(hopefully). Pretty soon I'm going to have my buddy start on a 1955 to motivate my bus. That should make for an awesome setup, and I can't wait to get it.

I'm having conflicting thoughts on wether to go the freeway flyer route talked about above or to take out the reduction boxes and go with IRS on my '66 bus. I was wondering, if I keep the reduction boxes, can I still lower the back (just like two inches)?

How much would it cost to switch from stock to a freeway flyer, and what would need to be replaced, and such?

The beaauty of the freeway flyer is that there is NO modification necessary to your rebuilt tranny as far as anything outside the case is concerned. If you are doing a core exchange, just make sure you get an exact match for the old tranny. I did my '64 bus with the small nut (even lower gear ratio) redux. boxes. I couldn't be happier. The bus used to max out arount 58mph, now I can do 65mph all day. Any faster and the air pressure starts to lift the whole bus off the road. Drove from Denver to New Jersey and actually passed 13 cars, everyone else passed us.

vw also used differant gear ratios in the reduction boxes. There is a big differance between the big and small nut generally but then they also ran I believe four differant ratios in the big nut boxes.

Surferbus,
I used Troy's Toys here in Laguna Beach. He is on Laguna Canyon Road and is listed in the phone book. He does very good work but takes a long time as he has lots of other work...

yes you can lower your bus a few inches with your rreducyion boxes still in place....you just move your torsion arms up or down...they just pop off and pop on its alot easier with the tranny out.

Does anybody know what can cause a tranny to have 4 reverse and 1 forward? What could have gone wrong in tranny assemble to cause this?

sounds like what happens when u lower a bus and don't flip the ring gear from one side to the other. try this at bus boys.

Check out the Tech tips on this page, I switched my tranny myself, I took over 60 pictures of the procedure, and documented it all. I hope you guys can learn something from it! Enjoy! :)
