Just curious if anyone has any input on putting a Type 4 engine in a Bus -- advantages, disadvantages, necessary modifications, etc. Thanks.

Wow Derek, that's quite a modification. I do know that you have to buy specialized engine tin to seal up the engine compartment. You will probably also have to get a fly wheel that fits split bus trannys. I'm not sure if you will have to do any cutting or anything like that though.

You need to talk to Jake Raby. He is the expert on Type IV's. He moderates a forum at - http://shoptalkforums.com/bbs/cgi-bin/forumdisplay...LastLogin=

Good Luck,

Thanks for the advice, guys. I don't think I'll do it, but there's a local guy with a rebuilt type 4 engine for cheap, so I was just curious. Thanks again.

I'm in the process of readying a 2.0L T-4 engine to drop into my '66 E-Z Camper. I've already converted in to an upright configuration ("Cali conversion") and am now in the middle of adapting CIS fuel injection on for it.

Just prior to moving up to WA state from CA, I stuffed it into the engine bay to see how everything fit. . . MAN, I can't WAIT to get it done!! My current 1776 scoots nice, but the 2.0L CIS FI T-4 is going to SCREAM (well as much as a BUS screams that is :-) ). I threw some random pics of the basic conversion up here (http://www.nateswaterart.com/vw/finished_pics/) if anyone wants to see it. I can't seem to find my "stuffed" pics though, sorry. :-( I'm no expert on T-4s, but if you have questions about the conversion, I'm getting pretty intemate with it and could probably answer some basic questions. P-mail me. . .

Nate-

Cool site as always! Did you have to modify the engine compartment or apron to get it to fit? And does it bolt up to the tranny the same?

WideRidezzz-

The guy was here in AZ. He wanted under $400. I sent him a message yesterday and he said it's sold :(

The motor fits in the same as a T-1, just shorten the bottom two engine mount studs on the case. You would need to use either a 210 or 215mm flywheel modified for use in a T-1. You have to custom make/trim all the engine surround tin. The T-4 is a little longer, but it all fits within the original engine compartment just fine. There is absolutely NO CUTTING of your precious german metal required :-)
