Are there any differences between the actual transaxle that goes into bug and a bus? I know the axle tubes are different and the bus has reduction gears, but are the actual cases the same size?

Greetings... they are identical... just make sure you put the differential in the right way.... or else you'll have 4 reverse gears and 1 forward......!!! Which actually happened to me when I finished restoring my 58 bus... nothing like the feeling of finally getting it all done and starting it up and you have 4 reverse gears....!! Rip it all apart and start over!!!! Because the bus has the reduction box, it turns the gear in the opposite direction. I don't remember which side the differential gear should be on for the bus, and which side for the bug.. have to look in the old shop manual... have fun... (parts are plentiful for the old split cases, you'll probably need a new main shaft,.. people trying to jam it in first while they are rolling....)

where in the world are YOU at? I live in St. Louis and it's damn near impossible to find split case parts around here and even harder to find someone willing to work on them. Never done a trans, but looks like i'm gonna be getting some experience since the cases match

I'm in vancouver, bc, but just order from wolfsburg west or vintage parts, they have every gear, spring, bearing you'll need, all nos, there was lots of the spare parts made for the split case trannys...
