OK, other end of the spectrum. Now I wanna hear about your biggest Bus nightmare. The kind of shit you hope you don't find when you hear about the "Van" in some old ladies garage. The stuff that makes you just go "what the fuck did this jackoff think he was doing?" Cut wheelwells, Jackman's, CBs hanging from the parcel tray (Hi Mark!), spare gas cans mounted on the tailgate, EMPI scoops....create a NIGHMARE! You've all seen 'em before and some of you older dudes made 'em. Impress me...

I've seen much worse, but I'd say this is a good start...

Derek- Good boy, that's the style we're looking for. How about dreaming one up, listing all of it's "options" and "features" and sharing it here with us. Either things you've seen done, heard about, or thought about in order to ruin the integrity of a nice old Bus.

Oh, ok, I think I can do that!

23 Window Deluxe:

Chopped
Shortened
Skylights bondo'd over
Spare tire mounted on nose
Bay scoops molded in
Torsions pulled
Spindles flipped
Rollin' on temps
Spring plates notched
Rocker rust bondo'd over
Cut, flared wheel wells (all four!)
Larger tires in rear than front
Cut bulkhead
Safaris caulked shut
Louvers,louvers everywhere!
Rag replaced with riveted sheetmetal cover
Stinger
Late Bay taillights molded in
Chain steering wheel
Extra large dash hole for stereo
Popout rubber painted over (Maaco-style!)
Disco ball/strobe light
House carpet
Pin stripes in place of deluxe trim
Square headlights molded in
Paperclips in place of fuses

...What did I miss?!

Derek Fri Dec 27, 2002 11:42 am

Oh, I know...

Running decklid free
Smashed jack points
Dash holes enlarged
CB Antenna
Extra holes in fresh air vent
Fuel lines patched with duct tape

I know there's more...

barndoor bus cut and welded to have a later smaller engine lid(side hinged) and lower engine shelf for a sweet hombrew camper interior

custom camper interior held in place by bolts through the exterior of the body

drivers side cargo doors welded closed becasue a double door doesn't leave enough room for my pressboard camper interior and the wood stove that vents out through the sheet metal where my pop out used to be.

dual gas tanks with one inside the passenger compartment.

crapper hole cut in the cargo floor so I don't have to get out at night. doubles as ice fishing hole, or a means to siphon gas from underground storage tanks when needed.

full length wood slat rack with the middle cut out to allow room for the 65 westy pop top I hacked in with tin snips and pop rivets.

pressed rear bumper cut for bug exaust with a weld on tow ball in the middle.

shag headliner and door panels in the cab

remnants of the fiberlass insulation that used to be in the cargo area roof hanging down from all the tar I installed it with.

cut divider wall

lawn chairs with the legs sawn off for front seats

wheels turned inside out (with hub cap clips broken off) to give the appearance of deep dish fat tires, accompanied by fiberglass flares

heart shaped windows in the luggage area.

pvc pipe rocker panels

pad locks and hardware for them on all the doors and gas flap. all with different keys of course.

corvair power

semi style running lights on the cab roof

lighted curb feelers

boat trailer tail lights cut in for front turn signals.

landlord green house paint brushed on

pinto tail lights and side badges

How about this former bus of mine? Vanagon tail lights, access holes in the rear, a bad tranny, no engine and some really bad welding. I thought I was getting a deal but I soon found out that I was wrong. I am so glad that bitch is gone!

Can we assume what the "T O S" stands for? Something like "P O S"?

truckersmike Fri Dec 27, 2002 5:04 pm

At that time it probably did, but it really stands for my band's name, Truckers on Speed.

i saw a hidious single cab at scotty's in bakersfield last december. at least it started life as one. it had the complete makeover...sacreligious i though. but at least it has a chance to someday re-realize it's potential in this boneyard by a compassionate vw friend. i nearly cried!
it had early 60 corvair/econoline arrow taillights with the fins down the length of the body sides & double rectangular headlights jutting out of the nose in a fab'd housing that extended beyond the 2x8 plank bumper. cut rear wheel wells housed tractor/4x4 mud tires on close 5(GM) white rims. i think it was also corvair engine converted too. i don't recall for certain but think it may have had a small chain steering wheel or the like, and hot rod (like early 70 'vette) exhaust pipes running down the rockers.
the owner of the yard said one day he'd restore, but i'd hate to see whats under all that bondo when stripped.
also while we're at this yard, i spotted a shorty panel about half as long as it shoulda been from the factory. up here in the high desert, such a vehicle would surely be blown off the road in a crosswind over 40mph and would likely roll like a tumbleweed for a bit before coming to rest against the first joshua tree/abandoned washing machine it encountered.
and lets not forget the ghia-sgl. cab monstrosity i saw at octo last winter!
i can go on & on....
i like mild custom, but please no chopping/cobbling. it gives our type IIs identity complexes.
